This is one of my favorite episodes of Computer Chronicles, it centers around software piracy/cracking. This clip shows an interaction between a pirate demonstrating the use of a cracking-oriented BBS, and an attorney talking about the legal issues. Not only is it a fascinating historical snapshot (1985) of something that is still obviously relevant, but I absolutely love how respectful Stewart and Gary always were, even if they didn't condone the subject matter. I really like this style and quality of technology journalism, I wish we had more of it today.

Picked up the absolutely beautiful "Crackers" two book set by Marco Breddin. Extensive history of software cracking and cracktros (and BBSes, the demoscene, etc). Some small errors here and there but overall a great history and amazing photos and screenshots. So many good memories - can't wait to dive in more!

Всех приветствую, читатели Хабра! Вторая часть исследования безопаности файлов pdf. После того, как я опубликовал первую часть ( https://habr.com/ru/articles/906076/ ) у одного из моих коллег возник вопрос: а что если зашифровать pdf файл при помощи программы Adobe (естественно на Windows). Естественно что, меня заинтересовал этот вопрос, и мы решили совместно с моим коллегой зашифровать файлы в ОС Windows (10) при помощи Adobe и на сайте, указанном в первой части. Один из файлов был зашифрован в Windows но на сайте указанном в первой части статьи. Сделал я это специально для того, чтобы узнать не будет ли проблем совместимости на двух ОС - Windows и Linux, и возможно ли кракнуть такой файл, который был создан в другой системе, так сказать тестовый запуск. Другие файлы были зашифрованы в программе, опять же на ОС Windows. Почему мой коллега и я задались вопросом возможности крака? В Adobe возможно зашифровать pdf файл при помощи небезызвестного AES! Всех приветствую, читатели Хабра! В сегодняшней статье я поделюсь примерами кракинга зашифрованных паролями pdf-файлов и файлов архивов. Я покажу примеры работы с такими программами как pdfcrack, rarcrack, John the Ripper. Естественно данные программы работают в линукс (в моем случае Kali Linux), но под Windows я думаю есть аналоги данных программ. И да, в этой статье я затрону примеры связанные с john, хоть возможно на Хабре и имеются статьи связанные с данной программой (а в русскоязычном сегменте интернет точно есть описания как с ней работать), но в рамках данной статьи мои примеры будут уместны и необходимы. Game copy protection was an art form, as well as #cracking these protections. This cat and mouse game evolved over time, with protections including more and more complicated and well-hidden checks trying to identify poor or quickly made cracks. The best protections hindered the release of a crack long enough for the game to hit enough initial sales. After the initial sales the eventual release of a crack would no longer hurt (much).
Rewind to 2025 and legal purchase of early 90s PC games from places such as COG: Apparently, there are plenty of releases that have the poor crack built-in, and where the anti-crack checks kick in, making the game unplayable. The irony is that the only way to play is to get a proper "real crack".

Quick-Drying, Fast-Cracking
Water droplets filled with nanoparticles leave behind deposits as they evaporate. Like a coffee ring, particles in the evaporating droplet tend to gather at the drop’s edge (left). As the water evaporates, the deposit grows inward (center) and cracks start to form radially. After just a couple minutes, the solid deposit covers the entire area of the original droplet and is shot through with cracks (right).
Researchers found that the cracks’ patterns and propagation are predictable through a model that balances the local elastic energy and and the energy cost of fracture. They also found that the spacing between radial cracks depends on the deposit’s local thickness. Besides explaining the patterns seen here, these cracking models could help analyze old paintings, where cracks could hide information about the artist’s methods and the artwork’s condition.
