Was fortunate enough to attend Community Day at the Eames Institute Archives (https://www.eamesinstitute.org/visit/) in Richmond, CA. This free event featured an abbreviated version of their usual $85 tour, only announced in a couple of small local media outlets to thank the community on their one-year anniversary of opening. Only a few full tours are offered each week, and tickets disappear immediately when released.

"Eames plywood chairs exhibit a functional and sculptural, harmoniously simple design that flexes to fit the sitter through pivoting rubber shock-mount connections. Developed from 1943–48 by Evans Products’ Molded Plywood Division, the project was based initially on a conventional, single-piece seat and back. A two-piece design proved more practical and cost effective, with separate seats and backs formed from sheets of wooden veneer that were glued and pressed between heated steel and plaster molds. Molded plywood chairs were available in ash, birch, rosewood, and walnut veneers in natural, red, or black finishes, or upholstered in a variety of animal hides, fabric, leather, or Naugahyde vinyl." Was fortunate enough to snag a ticket to Community Day at the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity Archives (https://www.eamesinstitute.org/visit/) in Richmond, CA. TBH, I wasn’t all that familiar with the Eames’ work. I was aware of the chairs, of course, but had no clue about the people who designed them. More than just furniture makers, the Eameses were true artists and designers, making everything from films to art to signs.

It’s a privilege to have this collection practically in my backyard. It’s a truly fascinating glimpse into two amazingly gifted artists.

When I have time I like to wander about the fediverse - yet it struck me, only today, that most of the things I stop at, or comment on, at other peoples sites never appear here on my site.
I am going to change that.
Something I really enjoy are auctions, so here`s a recent discovery at Adam Partridge`s in West London - kinfolk to the original 1940s Charles & Ray Eames one, who lives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The bottom of the picture is a coloured rug on a white ground, autumnal, red, brown, gold. And at the top is a brown wooden desk, with what is called a kneehole in the centre front and four drawers to both sides of that. People don`t use desks any more, they don`t need them with tablets etc. In fact I am on the kitchen floor right now on my chromebook, with a hot dog who is enjoying the cool of the linoleum.
The centre of the picture is a trio of plastic pachyderms, waiting to be bought, and hopefully to be loved, not just sold on for a quick and heartless profit. They are very stylized and pretty much made from one sheet, bent and cut, the sides and legs being bent round like a book from off the spine at the top, which is allowed to elongate to include a little stumpy tail; and the head being made similarly except that this has the ears and side of the face as the parts that bend away, slightly triangularly, from that central spine, and the trunk is allowed to elongate down as the spine. The largest one is grey, he is in the middle, facing to the right, touching trunks with a slightly smaller white one who is facing left. Then touching the side of the grey one with their trunk is a much smaller red one, who only comes up to the top of the grey`s legs. I liked him best. I suppose they have no real purpose, catch dust, and I would fall over them in the darkness. But it was fun to see them - and it is even more fun to share them with all of you.
I am going to do more of this..

Ordered back in March from DWR in Cambridge…… just got delivered this week…
