Reaching the end, but still so lovely.

A single, multi-layered flower with petals in shades of golden brown, red and cream stands alone against a background of green zinnia leaves. The centre is a rich dark chocolate colour with a slim red upside down V of petal in the middle.

I have thousands of photos of UK plants, so I thought I'd post one a day to just brighten things up a bit. Here's Coltsfoot, an early flowerer where the Dandelion-like flowers arrive before the leaves to get an head start on attacting pollenators. The flower head is actually hundreds of flowers that have turned into thin strips and "joined forces" to make one large "flower" #FlowerADay #Botany #Flower #Nature

A bright yellow flower head with no leaves, against a brown background of woody material. The flowerhead consist of hundreds of yellow strips radiating out from a central core.

Surprise!
Some surprises are really exciting, and this was definitely one for me. I had seen this plant growing at the corner of the house under the crab apple tree the last year or two and I had almost pulled it out as a weed as it just looked strange. I guess I never got around to tidying that section of the garden, with so much to do everywhere else. So this year, when it started to grow, I thought I would keep an eye on it and get rid of it, if it seemed to be taking over, especially as it had these odd black balls growing along the stem at the leaf junctions. Long after our Asiatic lilies had finished flowering, I noticed that it seemed to have lily-like long buds appearing. I still wasn't convinced it could be anything noteworthy as we hadn't planted anything there and so why would there be? Then I saw the buds developed a tinge of colour and began to get excited. A couple of days after, there was this gorgeous Tiger Lily flower, in all its glory. What a wonderful surprise it was and I could hardly wait to share it with you all.

Wishing you all a day with some good surprises just like this one.

This flower can be seen full size along with the others in my gallery by going to the Flower Almost Every Day Gallery here: elliekennard.ca/ekgallery/flow

A fully open tiger lily flower is shown, with the raised fark brown or black dots on the curled back orange petals. The stamens hang arched downward. The stem of the plant is to the left of the frame, with what seem to be black seeds or fruits here and there along the stem and branchlets. In front of and pointing down to the right of the flower is an unopened flower bud with a single spider web thread leading down to the right and out of the frame. There is a bokeh in the background.

Good Day Sunshine

Here is some sunshine on a stem for you!

Here is a ray of sunshine to brighten your day, friends. I believe this Heliopsis Helianthoides is known as a false sunflower, but it looks really like a sunny flower to me, nothing false about it. I hope you find some sunshiny moments today, everyone.
I’ve renamed the gallery and the theme to be “A Flower Almost Every Day”, which more accurately represents what I can comfortably manage.

Inspiration
These yucca and daylily flowers have such a fragile beauty, lit by the low, soft light of the early evening sun. Looking at them, you would not believe that in the past few days they have been through days of intense heat, followed by torrential rains. Those rains caused flash floods and terrible destruction, washing out roads and a bridge. Yet, here they stand. They obviously have a strength that belies their apparent fragility. I hope that we all find the inner strength to withstand the storms we encounter and still remain standing, or, at worst, stand back up, with the help of our friends and those who love us.

I hope you enjoy the new colour scheme I have for my new start. I forgot to mention it in the last post.

Ajuga. or Bugle flowers and bumblebee

May will start to bring spring flowers in more profusion, though this particular one is not yet blooming here. It's pretty ubiquitous here, once it takes hold, as you can read in the linked post on my site. Enjoy this, as the bees obviously do!

This is inspired by a posting by @catselbow and a photo by @mikako6 , so thank you to both!

By Way of Celebration

I'm so pleased to have got our taxes done and e-filed that this lovely bright explosion of deep yellow crocus flowers from a post of mine in 2021 is a perfect fit for my mood.
These were spotted early on in the pandemic restrictions, when we were 'still able to travel into the city'. This post (linked) brings back memories. Happy Monday!

Some deep yellow crocus flowers are hiding among slim fronds of green and white leaves that almost bury these lovely blooms. A few of the flowers are now finishing, showing deeper, richer, almost orange colouring, while some are still fairly young blooms.

Lily Empress is not at all shy: look at those layers of petals. The perfume is a garden-filling knockout of a fragrance. Like Anouska that I showed you the other day, this is a roselily, and it's my first year growing them. Here with the Barbie pink phlox and magenta lychis coronaria.

Morning glory Grandpa Otts: this electric beauty surprises me every morning as its trumpets open at different places on the vine. I managed to keep the slugs off (garlic spray!) when they were babies, so now about a dozen plants are climbing through the August garden. Each flower opens for just one day. But what a day.

Today for you I have the indescribable #lily Anouska, a fragrant double form that looks like a lotus before it opens fully to show its stamens. Until this year I've never grown one of these double doubles, which are known as roselilies, and I've been waiting for this day. It's a stunner and I'll be growing it again. Mainly I garden for fragrance, and this has a fresh, gorgeous floral scent that doesn't overwhelm.
