Golden Whistler calling – a short video

This morning, a Golden Whistler stayed in one spot for long enough for me to get out my camera and record a few seconds of his song. So, for your enjoyment, here it is!

https://youtu.be/2JvVLFxrqN0

Golden Whistlers are small birds, about the size of a wren. They have a black head and a white bib, and the golden chest, underbelly, and collar that give them the first part of their name. The second part of the name comes from their lovely whistling calls. I’ve published more videos and pictures of previous sightings.

Common name: Golden Whistler
Scientific name: Pachycephala pectoralis
Approximate length: 16-18 cm
Date spotted: 3 December 2025 (summer)
Location: Manly Dam Reserve, New South Wales, Australia: 33°46’45.0″S 151°14’54.2″E

On my lunchtime walk today, I spotted a Golden Whistler, and a Rufous Shrikethrush and one of the local King Parrots (who seemed to think I should have seed, but since I was out on a walk, I did not).

A female Golden Whistler checking me out, as I checked her out, on the driveway at lunchtime today.

An almost high-key photo of a female Golden Whistler on a stub of a broken branch of a small tree. She is mostly shades of pale brown with a bit of grey, but has a golden rump. She has large eyes and a short pale beak. Her he'd is cocked to one side, and she appears to be looking down at the camera from her right eye.A less backlit shot of the Golden Whistler. She is now on a thinner branch, and slightly higher up the tree than the previous shot. Here her browny-grey colouring is more noticeable, as is her yellow rump.

Golden Whistler - Pachycephala pectoralis

Though Golden Whistlers sometimes perch quietly among the foliage of trees or shrubs, the males are often noticeable by their rich, golden plumage, extending from their underparts and in a collar around the bird’s neck, contrasting with a jet-black hood and a white throat patch. The female whistler is drab by comparison, greyish and indistinct. Even if they are not seen, their beautiful whistled song carries on the wind for hundreds of metres and is a common sound in the Australian bush throughout spring and summer. My passion is wildlife photography and I hope I can bring the beauty of nature into your home and show how amazing nature is. Every single animal needs our protection as they all play an important part in our survival.

There is an abundance of scientific reports telling us that the rate of extinction is happening at an alarming rate. More and more fauna and flora are going to disappear. With my wildlife photography, I hope to showcase a fraction of animals before they are gone. Only what you know, you will love and protect…

Clearly it was a good time to pop out for a walk if I wanted to see Golden Whistlers.

The female (pictured thrice here), obligingly stopped out in the open a couple of times, unlike the male, who stayed high in a tree and mostly obscured.

It's time for another edition of #BirdButtsOfBrisbane

This time we have a #WhiteThroatedHoneyeater high up in a tree; a female #GoldenWhistler ; a #LaughingKookaburra and an #AustralianBrushTurkey

Clearly that #YellowFacedHoneyeater was keen to capture all its sides. Pictured here facing left this time.
Also, a male #ScarletHoneyeater briefly in a position where it could be photographed, and a couple of shots of a female #GoldenWhistler who happily posed for me relatively close by (albeit in deep shade).

Whistle me this!

Male Golden whistler with a mouth full.

As the name suggests, this image is of a bird with a brilliant bright yellow body, a black ring around its neck & head and a white chin & throat. It has a green seed in it’s mouth that it is about to chow down on.
