#ProQuest + #GoogleScholar = scam? Exhibit #123:

- Researcher publishes article in journal, using #CC BY.
- ProQuest republishes article, with author, title, date, DOI, licence. Also, with terrible layout, but without images.
- Their DOI doesn't link anywhere. You need to type "https:/doi.org/", add the DOI, paste URL, to find the actual publication. Grey zone of CC BY requirements?
- GS indexes the publication and provides the ProQuest link instead of the proper URL.

Aaargh.

Screeshot of the ProQuest page with one example of this practice, here with a Programming Historian lessen by Diana Santos.Google Scholar search result for the same article, with the data source mentioned as ProQuest, and with the link (invisible) on the title going to the ProQuest page.

🚀🤓 Because everyone knows the best way to spend your time is writing a doctoral thesis on so you can *maybe* win $51k from Google. But hey, at least you'll have a killer LinkedIn post about how you beat a kernel PoW with AVX512 and maybe two people at a conference will be impressed. 🙄👏

#Google Scholar’s blocking of #Apple iCloud Private Relay users is bonkers, in part, because the blocking occurs even when *logged in* to #GoogleScholar: discussions.apple.com/thread/2

It’s a clear reminder that companies like #Google don’t just want to track you on THEIR websites; they want to track you on ALL websites.

🎓 Can fake papers really boost real academic reputations?
Yes—and it’s happening right now.

🧠 Researchers tested how easy it is to publish AI-generated papers on ResearchGate… and saw real citation counts go up for questionable profiles.

⚠️ This isn’t just about bad actors—it’s about systemic flaws in how we measure academic impact.

How should platforms and researchers respond?

Weird facts about Google Scholar (GS):

- GS indexes my personal blog (seanfobbe.com)

- GS does not index Zenodo (zenodo.org)

- GS picks up Zenodo datasets if they are cited by DOI in regular papers

i have a google scholar alert for a couple of my favorite authors, and when they publish a new paper, i get a link in my email about it... well, somehow they figured out who this author is and sent it to me, even though the PDF says "anonymous authors - paper under double blink review"!

ist nicht so richtig schlau, oder? Meine veröffentlichte Diss. von 2006, deren Untersuchungszeitraum 1897 beginnt, wird bei Google Scholar teilweise mit Erscheinungsgsjahr "1897" gelistet.

Let's see if #scinapse's free version could replace #GoogleScholar for finding papers 🤔

Massive long shot but... does anyone have a support contact email account for Google Scholar? If the account details are not generic, please feel free to share via a private mention.

I've had this GS profile for years, and I moved it to my glasgow.ac.uk account around 18 months ago without issue. But, for inexplicable reasons, I have recently discovered that I am unable to log into this profile without GS wanting me to set up a new one. (?!?!)

Okay, actually one reason I can't yet bring myself to part with Google Scholar - the paper recommendations it sends to be are actually good, and reduce the stress and feeling of overburdening that comes from reading the arXiv.

It seems to be the one product where Google has not yet ruined the algorithm.

(I think I would actually pay a small fee to get as good recommendations from a less-evil company)

#GoogleScholar #Degoogle

I noticed I was getting spammed in my Google Scholar alerts this morning. Evidently some companies put out something that looks like a "research article" but leads to a spammy webpage with a "research article," a company contact form, job listings, etc. I guess this is a new low in SEO shenanigans.

I think my next Degoogling step will be to get rid of my Scholar profile. It’s hard to keep up to date, full of inconsistencies and overemphasises bibliometrics.

And for those who miss Google Scholar, there is a nice substitute in the fediverse. 😉

Until today, I had used my Google Scholar profile as a link here in the bio. I just changed it to #OpenAlex. Thanks, OpenAlex, for your service.

GPT-fabricated scientific papers on Google Scholar: Key features, spread, and implications for preempting evidence manipulation misinforeview.hks.harvard.edu/
"Roughly two-thirds of the retrieved papers were found to have been produced, at least in part, through undisclosed, potentially deceptive use of GPT. The majority (57%) of these questionable papers dealt with policy-relevant subjects (i.e., environment, health, computing), susceptible to influence operations. Most were available in several copies on different domains (e.g., social media, archives, and repositories).
Two main risks arise from the increasingly common use of #GPT to (mass-)produce #fake, scientific #publications. First, the abundance of fabricated “studies” seeping into all areas of the #research infrastructure threatens to overwhelm the scholarly communication system and jeopardize the integrity of the scientific record. A second risk lies in the increased possibility that convincingly scientific-looking content was in fact deceitfully created with #AI tools and is also optimized to be retrieved by publicly available academic search engines, particularly #GoogleScholar. However small, this possibility and awareness of it risks undermining the basis for #trust in #scientificKnowledge and poses serious societal risks."
