"I put laundry in the machine, forget about it — wet, unspun — and find it dried and folded in the basket. The dishwasher gets unloaded before I even notice it is on. Sometimes one of us has a hard day and disappears while the other two pick up the slack. Sometimes two of us are down and there’s still one left to make beans on toast for dinner. These are not spectacular acts, but they are the glue."

How can I get out of all these boring household tasks?

Dear Jane, my parents keep giving me loads of chores to do and saying something about “responsibility” and “being a grown-up”. I mean, what are they on about? I only just turned 30. How can I get out of all these boring household tasks?

Unhappy from Hampton

Oh my poor beleaguered buttered scone of injustice!

How dare your parents suggest you take on responsibilities simply because you’ve reached the tender and innocent age of thirty?! Why, you’re practically still in the larval stage of adulthood, just barely crawling out of your sock drawer of self-discovery!

Let me tell you, chores are a vicious rumour spread by people who don’t own enough decorative hats. I once avoided all housework for seventeen consecutive years by pretending I was allergic to dust, soap, and effort. It worked marvellously, until I was eventually mistaken for a long-lost Victorian ghost and exorcised from my own kitchen.

Now, here’s my expert advice for dodging every chore ever:

  1. Invent a fake PhD in “Domestic Aversion Syndrome.” Tell them you’re part of a long-term study that forbids vacuuming due to potential sock displacement trauma.
  2. Hide in the laundry basket. They’ll never think to look for you there—especially if you blend in by wearing nothing but unpaired socks and a tea towel turban.
  3. Fake extreme hat-related injuries. “Oh no! My feathered fez slipped and I twisted my dishwashing instincts!”
  4. Train a squirrel to do your chores. Failing that, just blame everything on the squirrel. “Why didn’t you do the dishes?” “Because Reginald chewed through the sponge, obviously.”
  5. Write them a strongly worded note in icing. I’ve found that cakes with messages like “Responsibility Is a Conspiracy” or “Let Me Nap, I’m Thirty” are both delicious and persuasive.

And finally, for full escape velocity, I recommend my bestselling guidebook “Grown-Ups Are a Myth: Escaping Adulthood With Grace and Cupcakes.” It pairs beautifully with “Avoidance Through Sock Puppetry” and the ever-popular “Ten Reasons I Can’t Hoover (Allergies, Ghosts, and General Vibes).”

So pop on your most distracting hat, declare yourself emotionally fragile, and lock yourself in the loo with a nice hot pot of prune juice until the laundry folds itself or they give up entirely.

Irresponsibly yours,

Living room and kitchen done.
Next - the bathrooms.

Kasa has arrived already (apparently the ward was dreadfully noisy so she persuaded the staff to arrange her TTO drugs early).
Her brother is coming tomorrow, but doesn't sound very happy about it.

Right. That's the housework (mostly) done.

I really must get out of bed and get today booted up.

I've really, really got to get some housework done today, our daughter is coming tomorrow and the place is a mess.

Talking of Kasa, she's got agreement on discharge from the hospital, and she can move stuff into her new supported accomodation flat any time from today. She's organised a man & van for about three weeks time, to properly move her furniture. She's going to do a phased changeover from the psychiatric ward to the flat - which is sensible.
I had a long talk with the manager yesterday and they sound really good. Fingers crossed!

My backache from the holiday rucksack is getting a little better, but I'm still taking the pills occasionally.

Whatever your day brings, and wherever it takes you - slap the day in the face with a big toothy grin!

The sausage is cooking dinner!
This Grim(m) tale - The Mouse, the Bird, and the Sausage - warns of what happens when you let outside opinions start dictating who should be doing which jobs in your household, viz. Everyone Dies.
(This illustration by Walter Crane, who drew by far the jolliest Sausage of them all.)

There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse

This is what I'm aiming for 🤣

Gosh, what a morning!

My first job was to handwash my two gilets, but I found that the kitchen sink was blocked.

Dismantling the under-sink plumbing revealed not so much a blockage but a mega-stinky, crusty, congealed set of pipes that all had to come out.
Why is it the stink of drains lingers on your skin for so long?
But it's back together, and no leaks (yet).
I've left the under-sink cupboard for Sacha to sort out.

While I was in #plumbing mode I decided to clear out the shower tray drain. It has to be done occasionally, but .... eeeyuk!

I've done the rest of the #housework (including the washing!) that I'd got planned.
I've also fielded stupid questions from our daughter's Social Worker - things that are really for her to sort out, not me.
Plus, I've had a bonus bike ride to the local trading estate to order some fence panels for the side of our drive.

As it's 14 days - no I'm not counting - until our French #interrail trip - I've checked the pass details.

No cuppa yet!

No Tai Chi today - our teacher is on holiday.
So I'm pretending to do #housework again.

I've already cleaned out the cat litter tray - we've found out that Kit is peeing just outside her tray on the floor - so I've slightly moved the tray, cleaned it out, and given her two (yes two!) outdoor alternative trays - fine until it rains. I've also plugged in a couple of ancient Feliway pheromone diffusers.

I've got to make a couple of phone calls, and there's some paperwork that needs sorting out.

Have a great Tuesday

Stairs cleaned.
Cat played with.
Mini Cheddars eaten
Balearic Beats on the radio (fairly loud)

Next?
There's a Cornish Pasty in the fridge which might be fuel for the vacuuming.

This book sounds absolutely fascinating. Women's uncompensated labour deserves more attention and discussion.

#Today
I've deep cleaned our bedroom.
Attended Kasa's ward round and had separate, long, phone call with her Social Worker (which led to a bit of internet research).
Sorted out one of Kasa's financial problems (and now I've got an email requesting me to amend the details on the standing order - the second word is 'off').
Waved a damp cloth at the hall & kitchen floors.
Vacuumed the landing and the spare bedroom (& emptied the cleaner).
Been on the garage roof to sort out one of my #HamRadio wire antennas that had got misaligned.
Made lunch (peanut butter sandwich & a packet of cheese & bunion crisps!)
Put the bins out.
Sat in the sun on the patio with Sacha when she got home.
So - a productive sort of day I guess.

Tomorrow we're test driving electric cars!

Bugger!
It was our daughter's ward round this morning and we were waiting with baited breath for news of a move to a new supported living placement (this time with a truly professional outfit).
The provider was their but they don't have any vacancies - contrary to what Kasa's Social Worker said - and won't have news of vacancies for at least a fortnight.
However they are going ahead with an assessment to see if they are a match for Kasa, aso all is not lost.
Unfortunately, we're not sure that the Social Worker is aware of all the providers in the area where Kasa is, and wants to stay in - so I'm going to try a bit of homework later.

First though - more vacuuming upstairs!
Then to check if the washing on the line has dried (no chance!)

HILDA is a wonderful study, but when reading its findings about gendered division of domestic work, remember that self-report methods (‘how much time do you / your partner spend doing x’) always skew toward socially acceptable answers.

It’s difficult for many women to admit how unbalanced the division of labour is in their homes (‘he’s wonderful, he’s so much better than his dad’) & many men & kids are not aware of just how much domestic work women do.

For my PHD 20 years ago I interviewed, individually & at length, women, men & teenage kids in 25 families, asking them: What gets done? Who does what? Is it fair? How do you think it should be? And for the kids, What do want it to be like when you are an adult? &, how will you make this happen? I asked in turn about domestic tasks, planning & organising, & the emotion work of keeping everyone happy while making it all happen.

I found that most families observed a hierarchy of work in which a man’s work & leisure was at the top, then the kids’ leisure & schooling, then domestic work, with women’s paid work & leisure placed last. Only in families where this hierarchy was not disputed was there no conflict over domestic work. In families where the hierarchy was disputed, there was conflict. Where kids grew up with a dad who was entitled to not do much domestic work, that was what they wanted for themselves. Men & kids were ignorant of much of the work the women did, but for her to do it all was seen as fair ‘because she is mum’. Boys thought their future would be just as it is now, & that’s ok. Girls wanted work to be evenly shared - when asked how they would make that happen they said ‘I’ll just tell them’.

I concluded that until kids grow up in families where their dads do their full share of domestic work, nothing will change. These findings were not popular. Sadly, they have been shown to be correct.

I feel like I'm 'coasting in neutral ' this morning.

I've done the #housework I'd planned, plus a couple of other small jobs.
I've been thwarted in getting the picture back on the wall that fell down the other evening.
Currently eating biscuits and looking at mug cake recipes.

I've got to virtually attend our daughter's hospital ward round this afternoon, and Sacha has a telephone appointment at about the same time with her cardiology consultant.

I'm desperately looking forward to a tiny morcel of good news #today from one of these.
