Sam Mauhay-Moore: #Salmon seen in Upper #Klamath Basin for 1st time in century after historic Northern #California dam removal

“I never thought in my lifetime, or especially in my parents’ lifetimes, that we would see the salmon back up in our area,” Klamath Tribal Chairman William E. Ray Jr. told SFGATE.

"Both [tribal member Paul] Wilson and Ray said that the Klamath River’s renewal marks a shift toward their tribe’s treaty rights finally being secured."

For the first time in more than a century(!!), salmon are returning to the Klamath River's headwaters following the completion of a major dam removal project.

A good reminder that nature can rebound if we just let it 🐟

A story that brings #joy;
A story of #renewal.

Washington Post has the story of a group of Native teens who just completed the first kayak trip from the source of the #Klamath River in Oregon to where it meets the Pacific after 4 hydroelectric dams built in the 20th century were removed. As an unbound river, the Klamath is once again home to salmon -- and now these youths, with the blessings of their tribal elders, are continuing the healing.

It's not a short read. Revel in the pictures. And rejoice for the healing of the land, the river, and their peoples.

"Apr 4, 2025
The Klamath River now flows free for hundreds of miles from Southern Oregon to the ocean. But after the largest dam removal project in the U.S., challenges remain. Water shortages in the upper basin fuel toxic bacteria, disease outbreaks and conflicts over endangered fish as salmon swim upstream for the first time in a century."
