It is endlessly cool to me that weaving patterns are code for making fabric and that following the pattern is executing a program

Ive reached a point in this project where i either have to give up or start outright winging it until i make it to the finish line

Its intended to be the canopy of a parasol, but i miscalcluated when initially planning the project and its radius is currently half of what it needs to be to fit the frame i bought to finish it. My plan to "double" the original pattern isnt going to work as i thought it would and there will be huge additional sections i have to design and execute on top of the original doubling and its just so overwhelming to think about bc circles and math and planning are difficult

Ive already frogged and rewoven so much of this thing so many times, im learning a LOT as i go but its just... a lot to know much more of that there is to get thru before its done

Im hoping that sharing here will help me get grounded and motivated to dive into the second "half" of this thing

Made from thrifted thread, used 2.75mm hook

A somewhat close-up of the parasol canopy. Its made from white thread and features a fruit-and-foliage motif. The fruits are strawberry/acorn shaped and the leaves resemble ferns and strawberry leaves. I put my fingers next to the stitches for scale, theyre not the tiniest ive ever done but theyre still pretty small/fineWider view of the whole project in its current state. My whole hand on it for scale, by area the piece (functionally a doily at this point) is maybe ten times the size of my palm and fingers extended

My "almost a square meter of bobbin lace" is soon to reach its end. Just gonna finish this board and then I need to tie off the loose ends. And after that hand-sewing to a cloth I have already woven of the same thread (16/4 linen). In March this beauty will go to my exhibition in the Finnish Craft Museum.

The pattern is from 18th century. The name is 'Cornucopia vine' (in Finnish Runsaudensarviköynnös), though that is given by some researcher. The original name is not known.

Approximately 65 cm wide bobbin lace made on big boards. The lace is white linen, one end still attached to the boards used in making as the lace is still in progress. Length is around meter and a half.

Then all the numbers attacked my brain so I quickly retreated 👀😉

Yesterday we picked up our lace pieces from the Fiber Arts display in a local library (Morse Institute in ). When they invited us, we also suggested to them some books and items for their library to have. That's one way to defeat beginner books--provide access to legit books.

But they also added to their a beginner lace pillow setup! We are very psyched. Equipment is hard to assess as a beginner.

A shot of the library space where the sign above the aisle says "Library of Things" and the nearby metal shelves offer a bunch of things you can take to your house and use.

On the top shelf is another sign that says Home Things and just to the right of that is the lace pillow we asked if they would stock. It's not the actual pillow itself, it's their DVD holder kind of plastic item that shows the pillow and the components. Close up of that in the other image. The close up of the Home Things shelf and our lace pillow DVD box thing next to it. It shows the pillow and the other items that come with it, and there's a list of the components so people will know what comes with it.

You can take this DVD box to the main desk and check out a lace pillow and the other bits.

Quote of the day, 8 October: St. Louis Martin

My dear Friend,

I won’t be able to arrive in Alençon until Monday. It seems like a long time to me, and I’m longing to be with you.

Needless to say, your letter made me very happy, except I see that you’ve tired yourself out far too much. So I strongly recommend calm and moderation, above all in your work. I have some orders from the Compagnie Lyonnaise; once again, don’t worry so much. We’ll manage, with God’s help, to build a good little company.

I had the happiness of receiving Communion at Notre-Dame des Victoires, which is like a little heaven on earth. I also lit a candle for the intention of our entire family.

I kiss you with all my heart, while waiting for the happiness of being with you again. I hope that Marie and Pauline are being very good!

Your husband and true friend, who loves you for life.

Saint Louis Martin

Over the summer I made a cursed object: a bobbin lace pillow.

It’s made in a traditional way, passed down from a woman in Orsa. Only, instead of the horse hair she suggested I had to make it with human hair. The hair was ethically harvested, don’t worry. And it smells quite nicely of shampoo!

This style of pillow is for making freehand lace, called dalknyppling in Swedish.

Watching Silent Hill 2 Remake. James the protag did some little puzzle and a wardrobe opened with a wedding dress in it. The wedding dress had some nice lace on the bodice.

See, I think we can apply the 'something old, something new' principle to wedding dresses: antique lace designs. But also the cut of the dress could be "slutty".

I am proficient in quite a few 100s of years old lacemaking techniques. But how do we take 'bridal' and make it 'slutty'? 🤔
