Wow.
#Linode (#Akamai) DNS manager UI is TERRIBLE for SRV records.
Like...really, bad.
i am still proud of this sticker i did for Major League Hacking in 2022 while at Linode. It's the mascot, Linny, doing their best reenactment of my favorite version of the cover for the book 'Neuromancer.'
#art #design #illustration #branding #marketing #cloudcomputing #linode
This is such a terrible #web anti-pattern. Why did it take like 20 seconds to figure out how to login to my !#@$!# site I pay a few hundred a month.
I knew #akamai would f-up #linode
Mainly upset about the pricing, but even stuff like UX directly informs how you feel about your userbase. Why is the login link tiny, and above TWO folds.
Now that #hertzner has a US DC, I am looking to migrate. But I just need some time to duplicate the setup and ponder the move. Test the migration a few times, etc.

Apparently I have to have at least one #Linode running or they don't serve my DNS. This doesn't make sense to me because I still have website buckets which need the domain to work, and those are charged separately
Just compared prices between #VirtualMachines from #Hetzner and #Linode, both whom I have used well over the years, but I have mainly had physical servers with Hetzner.
Just found out that on average Hetzner VMs are 1/3rd of the price of similar/same machines from Linode.
That is a huge difference!
Fantastic, my #Linode that hosts mastodon.vanlife.is broke (I was updating to mastodon 4.5) and the backup from this morning won't restore..
As a matter of fact, NO backup is able to restore ..
Created a ticket and I am waiting for a response. But until I get this fixed the site is offline =/
@Mer__edith Even if it is necessary to keep a central control plane and centrally managed relay systems, there's no reason why you need to run in a single cloud or on a hyperscalar. Especially with the end-to-end trust model that #Signal has, the security requirements on control and relay nodes is lower.
There are also other non-hyperscalar clouds which would fit some of these needs. For example, the #Akamai Cloud (formerly #Linode) has been expanding its global footprint precisely for the use-case of taking on applications needing global footprint and performance but without being tied to a hyperscaler.
Using tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes can help orchestrate multi-provider / cross-platform deployments.
(Disclaimer: I'm an employee of Akamai, but also a long-time personal supporter of Signal.)
@anticdent @interstar my other blocker is that my #linode is so old I'm going to have to have them spin up a brand new node for me to set up and migrate to, which I just don't want to face. So I've been playing with some local stuff (#RandomParagraph, #VibePrototyping).
Today, i've been a very good boy, who made the internet a better place. :3 :blobpats:
Some genius put the whole #Linode object storage domain on a #SPAM #Mail #DNS filter list (#PiHole) - FIVE MONTHS AGO! 😱
That list is maintained by #SemperVideo (German TechTuber), who still hasn't found their way to the Fediverse, just like Linode, as well as #Level1Techs. 🤨
I'm discussing it in the L1 forum 👀👉 https://forum.level1techs.com/t/level1-linode-gets-dns-filtered-by-pihole/239199/3
Testing django-storages for a project and seems like there's a problem with #linode object storage 🙃
At least I was able to find this link about it
https://github.com/jschneier/django-storages/pull/946
Would have been much more frustrating if I had spent even longer debugging it when it was not a problem in my code.
I just switched to Pangolin from Cloudflare Tunnel. I hope it will fix federation issues.

A great start would be a collection of Terraform- or Terragrunt-based projects on a public git-repository that make it easy for organizations to quickly stand up their own presences on all of the major CSPs and smaller ones like #DigitalOcean or #Linode. Alternatively, ready-to-go docker containers registered on each of the major registries could help.
And, while Fedi doesn't have things like the old Google Plus shared-circles, well curated equivalents could help new users quickly get content flowing through their streams …Or maybe just make the "my server" or "global" tabs the default-view for newly-registered users?
