I'm in the market for a new (to me) laptop with good Linux support. I know there's a handful of manufacturers offering Linux hardware and they all seem great. My number one requirement is great battery life. I want to be able to be mobile and not be constantly worrying about where outlets are.

My use case: small projects, shorter video playback (quick yt tutorial, class videos but not necessarily looking for 4k movie playback), light gaming meaning like maybe some GBA emulators not AAA titles or competitive online stuff.

Does anyone have any real world use cases wrt battery life for System76, Tuxedo, Framework, Starlabs laptops?

@samuelsantaella @itsfoss I agree - that is the only real reason. #YotLD is not about anything technical, nor about market share! The true practical definition of #YotLD is when people can simply walk in to physical stores. and buy affordable laptops with #LinuxPreinstalled.

Remember, most people don't install Windows or macOS on their computers. In fact, they have no concept of an operating system - it's just a computer. They are only concerned with using the apps!

Huawei MateBook X Pro 2024 (Linux Edition) Goes on Sale

Huawei has unwrapped its latest Linux notebook, the MateBook X Pro 2024 Linux Edition — alas, it’s only available in China. The Windows-free MateBook X Pro 2024 uses the exact same hardware as the Windows version, but clocks in at CN¥300 cheaper owing to the lack of Windows license fee and a national subsidy for non-Western tech. Chinese consumers can reportedly claim an extra discount of CN¥2000 on the purchase price as part of a national subsidy to promote usage of homegrown tech. With US sanctions in play, Microsoft is reportedly not renewing its deal to supply Huawei with Windows licenses once :sys_more_orange:

From a cursory glance Elecrow’s CrowView Note looks like a regular laptop. DeepComputing, the company behind the recently-announced Ubuntu RISC-V laptop, is working with Framework Computer Inc, the company behind the popular, modular, and Linux-friendly Framework laptops, on a RISC-V mainboard option. The World’s First RISC-V Laptop Running Ubuntu

A RISC-V laptop preloaded with Ubuntu is in development, and Canonical is involved. The DC-ROMA RISC-V Laptop II is made by DeepComputing, a company formed by self-described “RISC-V pioneers” back in 2022, and based in Hong Kong. Their aim: develop and release all kinds of products to help drive development of the RISC-V ecosystem. And this is the second-generation version of their DC-ROMA laptop, though the first to run Ubuntu. This laptop is powered by the SpacemiT K1 system-on-a-chip, which packs 8 64-bit RISC-V cores running at 2.0GHz. This supports the RVA 22 Profile RVV 1.0 for “high performance computing”, :sys_more_orange:

TUXEDO Working on Snapdragon X Elite Linux Laptop

Linux laptop vendor TUXEDO has confirmed plans to release a Linux ARM laptop based on the Snapdragon X Elite SoC. It recently showcased a prototype of a new ARM notebook at Computex, the annual computer event in Taiwan. Powered by the Snapdragon X Elite and running an ARM port of their Ubuntu-based TUXEDO OS with the KDE Plasma desktop. This is the same chip that’s been in the (tech) news a lot of late as it’s powering Microsoft’s new wave of Copilot+ laptops running Windows 11 ARM. I've had some experience with secure #laptop hardware & software from @purism. They also make the #Purism #Key for secure boot, which I wrote about in #LinuxJournal some years back. Before that I used to buy hardware from a #Linux-focused reseller that shifted to a training company.

I like the ease-of-use the macOS ecosystem provides, but with MS #SpywareOS & Apple's flight from #FOSS to ever more proprietary software, I'd like to revisit #LinuxLaptops & #LTO9 servers.
