#MathMemes

by xkcd

An xkcd cartoon:

A person is sitting at a table, scribbling frantically on papers. Above their head and around them, there's a graph, which is a directional tree of natural numbers, eventually converging at 1.

Caption: The Collatz conjecture states that if you pick a numberm and if it's even, divide by 2 and if it's odd multiply by 3 and add 1, and you repeat this procedure long enough, eventually your frinend will stop calling to see if you want to hang out.

Also, los geht's. Welche berühmten Memes fehlen noch?

Five-panel meme based off a PBF Comic by artist Nicholas Gurewitch, but this time the comic is based off Mersenne primes.

2 to the power of 2 minus 1 passes a note to 2 to the power of 3 minus 1, who then passes the note to 2 to the power of 5 minus 1, who the passes the note to 2 to the power of 7 minus 1, who then passes the note to 2 to the power of 11 minus 1, who angrily unfolds it to reveal its own prime factors, 23 times 89.

The joke is that the first four people are Mersenne primes, whose prime "p" value in 2 to the power of p minus 1 are 2, 3, 5, and 7, corresponding to 3, 7, 31, and 127 respectively, but the next p, 11, resulting in 2 to the power of 11 minus 1, equalling 2047, is not a prime number, and the previous Mersenne primes are making fun of them for it.

This works not only as a mathematical model, right guys?

Ever walked into a tech event and thought, "Where are the women?" You're not alone! [1 of 2]

Let's look at why some tech groups feel a bit lopsided, using simple numbers. Imagine you're at a party:

1. If it's a "Code Party" (Software Developers): For every 10 people, you might see 8 or 9 men and only 1 or 2 women. This is a big difference, and it's why some tech meet-ups can feel very male-dominated

2. If it's a "Design Party" (UX/UI, Graphics): This party looks much more balanced! For every 10 people, you might see 5 or 6 men and 4 or 5 women. It's much closer to an even mix

Two men, labeled 'Backstreet Boys' and 'algebra teacher,' shaking hands. A text overlay reads 'tell me Y.' It's a humorous image referencing the Backstreet Boys' song 'I Want It That Way,' where the line 'tell me why' is a famous lyric, and the letter Y is a common variable in algebra
