Happy Iowa wildflower Wednesdy!

Pretty sure James Enright set a new record for most photos in this essay covering his many visits to prairie remnants along the Glacial Trail Scenic Byway in northwest Iowa.

Lead Plant (Amorpha canescens) is a legume found in prairies in the Midwest and Great Plains states. This July, I found them in Jefferson County, WI, with their flowers covered with bumblebees. I didn’t see many bumblebees at this time elsewhere; perhaps the Lead Plant was attracting them from far and wide.

Ep. 552 - Native Plant Seed Supply Chain
One of the biggest hurdles to native plant
gardening is sourcing native plants. Whereas
nurseries are starting to fill the demand, it is
nevertheless difficult to keep up with
demand. Sourcing seed from the wild is a
major part of this process, but how do we do
it ethically? Stripping native plant
populations of their seeds isn't good for the
habitats they comprise so this is where
groups like the Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed
Bank (MARSB) come in. Their mission is to
conserve and wisely manage the Mid-
Atlantic Region's wild seed resources,
through scientific sampling, ethical
collection, banking, and curation, and to
encourage and actively contribute to the
development of the Native Plant Material
supply chain throughout the region. Join me
and their Native Seed Collection Coordinator
John Price as we discuss the process behind
what it takes to achieve this mission and
some of the major struggles they face. This
episode was produced in part by April, Dana,

There were red Buckbrush berries (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on November 1, 2025. These are winter food here for a variety of wildlife.

@redcrew One of the nice things about the increasing #NativePlants market is having a selection of spring plants available at the end of the season. I added some marsh marigolds (Caltha palustris) and nodding onions (Allium cernuum).

For the leaves, I also use them to mulch. A lot of it gets stored in various ways to feed the #compost through the next year. #gardening #NorthernIllinois

How Indigenous food sovereignty can improve food security

Excerpt: "How can revitalizing Indigenous food systems improve food security?

Revitalizing Indigenous food systems can help diversify and localize food systems in ways that could buffer against food insecurity in a changing climate.

Dr. Grenz’s research team is working alongside Indigenous communities impacted by the 2021 heat dome and wildfires to understand the effects on culturally important plants.

'If you think of land as just vegetation and an aesthetic notion of what belongs, you’re going to have very different approaches and different outcomes to recovery than if you see that land as a food system, not just for humans, but for our animal, bird, fish and insect relations,' says Dr. Grenz. 'We’re working alongside communities to develop those Indigenized processes around wildfire recovery that honour Indigenous food systems, sustainability and resiliency.'

How can #settlers support the revitalization of Indigenous food systems?

Learn about the histories of the lands you live on and what the traditional food systems were, what they are now and what they could be, says Dr. Grenz.

Incorporating reciprocity into your relationship with the land is also important. 'Learn about the plants of those lands and find a way to invite them into your life. How can you take care of them, nurture them and steward them?' asks Dr. Grenz.

'One way might be to #Indigenize your own #backyard or #CommunityGarden. Or learn about Indigenous food system protocols and the concept of '#HonourableHarvest.' "

Activity from an almost-70F mid-November Saturday: emptied and spread the rest of the finish compost, finally put the tulips and final garlics in, finished planting the clearance #NativePlants...

Talked to north neighbor about using leaves from that side (already getting leaves from south neighbor), harvested the fallen leaves from the front yard. I don't clear the back so I really need all the leaves I can get. #gardening #NorthernIllinois

Now it is a mid-40F Sunday. Time to head outside and put the tools away.

One native shrub in the eastern U.S. (mostly the Mid-Atlantic and southeast states) that I don't see getting much appreciation is false indigo, or Amorphophallus fruticosa. Tolerates a wide range of soils from clay to sand, can take heat and drought well, and produces long spikes of dark purple flowers that pollinators enjoy. Also rumored to be useful as a natural insect repellant. #Plants #Flowers #NativePlants https://vnps.org/false-indigo-bush-amorpha-fruticosa/

While Arne Victor Garvi's work originally focused on species from all dry regions of the world, the conclusion eventually came that exotic species, whilst degrading the ecosystems, are not any better adapted to the Saharo-Sahelian climate than indigenous ones. He therefore switched to working exclusively with native plants.

“Scientists are now finding that vibrant remnant grasslands can sequester about 40 percent more carbon overall than closed-canopy forests that are protected from fire… And because that carbon is stored in roots rather than in the wood of trees, it isn’t rereleased into the atmosphere as happens when trees topple from wildfire, storms or disease.”

Got done the biggest part of the planning for next year's garden and feel so relieved to have this part over with. I have been wanting to add more native plants ever since I started letting weeds sprout and realized they were all invasives. Narrowed down my massive list to 67 different species and placed my seed order. List here: gardenathoverflymeadow.blogspo Now I can start the fun of second-guessing all of it. lol

It was an unseasonably warm day today so I thought I would get ahead on my winter sowing.

I have saved 16 X 4L milk jugs. Today I started by adding drainage holes in the bottom of each jug. Previous years I drilled a set of 1/2” holes in the bottom, this year I used I used my old soldering iron. I think I prefer the soldering iron, just a little bit easier.
