Native San Diego plant #421:
Caulanthus californicus

This one's commonly known as California Mustard (but also going by Guillenia lasiophylla and Streptanthus lasiophyllus as alternative scientific names). Photographed at the summit of Sentenac Mountain in the North Pinyon Mountains of Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

Native San Diego plant #420 in my ever-growing collection: Eremothera refracta.

Commonly known as Narrow-leaved Primrose, Narrowleaf Suncup, here it is seen growing out of granitic gravel in a wash in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California.

Close-up photo of desert wildflowers. The flowers are growing out of a gravelly bed of light-colored granite crumbles and have magenta-red stems, long and narrow dark green leaves, and flowers with round white petals. The background is soft and blurry and only the tallest of the flowers is in sharp focus.

In spring 2023, I stepped outside just minutes after the lawn had been sprayed and saw a beautiful American robin pulling worms from the same grass.
In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. That afternoon, I canceled the lawn service. Since then — and for as long as I own this property-he will be safe in my yard.

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) doing what it does best.

Lavender crowns, square mint stems, and a full pollinator shift on duty.

Perennials stabilize.

Monarda fistulosa cernunnosfoundation.com/nature

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) in full bloom, pale lavender tubular flowers forming shaggy, crown-like clusters atop tall green square stems. Multiple blossoms fill the frame, their petals curling outward in soft, irregular sprays. A dark butterfly with light spotting rests on one bloom while a bee works another, illustrating the plant’s role as a mid-summer nectar hub. The background is lush green meadow growth in bright sunlight, suggesting a healthy, layered perennial system.

Wild Bergamot fills the late-season nectar window when many early blooms have faded. It does not dominate — it participates. A structural pollinator plant for meadow systems and regenerative landscapes.

Seeding and transplanting #NativePlants for this year's #PlantSwap .
Only the table close to me, with all the blue tags, belongs to the plant swap. The greenhouse belongs to #OneCanopy , a nonprofit that grows natives for reforestation after wildfires, which is donating greenhouse space to us, even though their greenhouse space is in higher demand every year of #ClimateCrisis !

Many trays of seedlings and just-planted seeds, with blue species labels. In the background are volunteers who have been planting native plants. We are in a large greenhouse, surrounded by other tables with other native plants.

Osoberry blossoms form three small white clisters along a red branch marked with white lenticels. The flowers have 5 pointed petals and a cluster of light yellow anthers. The shrubby plant is growing alongside a trail in Ravenna Park, under maples and evergreens. The rough bark of a, Scots pine looksclike craggy canyons seen from above. The scaley shapes are colored sand, red, brown and gray, and are full of flat tops, peaks and crevasses.

Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatum) — a prairie compass that doesn’t need a map.

Leaves often align north–south, reducing heat load under high summer sun. Deep taproot. Built for drought. Built for wind. Built for time.

Photograph of Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatum) growing in native prairie grasses. Several bright yellow, sunflower-like blooms are visible along a thick, bristled green stem. The petals (ray florets) are slightly irregular and wind-touched, surrounding textured golden centers. The plant is surrounded by tall, mixed prairie grasses in shades of green and straw-brown, suggesting late summer conditions. The overall scene feels open, sunlit, and untamed — a resilient prairie species standing among its native community.

@waystation The theory of trusting forest regeneration to cope with climate change, I’ve been told, is that we’ll find the trees best adapted to the new climate because they’ll be the ones that survive — not “shuffling the species” so much as casting a wide net to find the individuals within a species that have helpful variation.

The number of those individuals could be zero, of course.

Now sowed outside. Also sowed some wild bergamot so it will get a wee bit of cold strat before it becomes fully spring. 🌱 #nativeplants
