One of Cunard's Ocean liners, probably the Mauritania, is sailing out of big block words that say Cunard.

A new #painting:

“The Wave”

The captain informs us that due to slightly choppy seas the giant paddling men have been deployed, but there is no cause for alarm.

An ocean liner heads into a big wave. There are two men paddling the ship, making it appear as if the ship is very small, or they are giants.

Whitehall Building, Aquarium and Battery Park, New York City
"Battery Park faces New York Harbor, being the Southern end of Manhattan Island. The Aquarium formerly known as Castle Garden Fort, contains a complete collection of fish, sea turtles and other deep sea animals. The Whitehall Building is the nearest skyscraper to the Harbor, the new addition rising to a height of 32 stories, 416 feet. The building was finished in 1921 at a cost of $4,600,000."--printed on verso.1917 New York City New York City New York City New York City New York City

The image is a vintage postcard of Whitman Building, a prominent landmark in New York City. The building is located on the waterfront and features a distinctive dome-like structure on top, which adds to its architectural charm. The postcard provides a bird's eye view of the area surrounding the Whitman Building, including other buildings and boats on the river. The Whitman Building stands out with its prominent size and central location in the image. There are no people visible in the image, giving it a somewhat tranquil feel. The color palette is muted, typical of postcards from the early 20th century, and includes shades of blue, green, and brown. The text on the postcard indicates that it was sent from New York City. Overall, the postcard captures a slice of New York City's architectural history in a picturesque manner.

The remnants of the Stenen Hoofd (the Stone Head). This used to be a large stone pier for the ships operated by the Holland-Amerika line, transporting passengers to the USA. Completely derelict now, and one of the few places in the city which won't be developed. Very quiet; I love it there.

On the blog. Historic photo: dining saloon aboard the SS Great Eastern, 1859. This ship, by far the largest of her day, was a quantum leap forward in the history of ocean liners. In this fascinating photo you can see the main passengers' table set for dinner in lavish Victorian fashion. My article contains some interesting tidbits on the history of this ship.

Today on the blog. 108 years ago today, May 7, 1915, a German submarine torpedoed the British liner Lusitania, killing 1200 people. This monstrous act of war was actually the culmination of a deadly psychological poker game between Britain and Germany where the stakes were innocent lives. Here's how Germany's chutzpah collided with Britain's naïvete and led to disaster. #histodons #oceanliners #worldwar1 #todayinhistory gardenofmemory.net/sailing-tow

Today on the blog. 54 years ago today, the Queen Elizabeth 2 went on her maiden voyage. She was created as the last word in modern ocean liner design, closing the door on the traditional Art Deco past. Just one problem: her décor was from 1969 and didn't age well! Within three years she was refitted, but in those early years she was the floating embodiment of the garish '60s. #histodons #ships #oceanliners #design #QE2

More from the SS France, 1912. I've been looking for this photo for years. Identified in a caption as first class, this doesn't look luxurious enough to me to be a first class cabin aboard a cutting edge French luxury liner pre-WWI. Still, looks pretty nice. The photo has been heavily retouched. France was beautiful, but suffered from rolling and instability in heavy seas that made passengers sick. She was retired in 1935. #histodons #oceanliners #staterooms

Stateroom aboard the SS France, 1912. Second class? There are two beds (not berths), one on the outboard wall, one inboard. The wall coverings, probably of fabric, have a pattern that complements the bedspreads and upholstery. There are twin washbasins between the beds. Not quite Baroque style, but comfortable for the time.

The Titanic was not the only ocean liner to debut on the Atlantic in the month of April 1912. The SS France sailed on her maiden voyage a week after the disaster. Also a 4-stack liner and designed as the last word in luxury, her interiors were Baroque in style (like this, the first class foyer) and she was known as the "Versailles of the Atlantic." She probably benefited from the Titanic disaster.

Black and white photo of the grand staircase and foyer of the SS France, April 1912. This is a two-deck space with ornate columns, paneled pillars on the ground level, and a terrazzo floor with an oval-shaped geometric design. The décor is Baroque and is clearly a French style.

As much carping as I've done today, I'd like to end the evening on a positive note. This is the first class dining saloon aboard the classic French Line ship SS Ile de France from 1927. One of the most beautiful rooms ever to grace the North Atlantic. Three decks high, revolutionary lighting, perfect meld of engineering and artisanry. The IdF was the first true Art Deco ocean liner and she struck the mold for so many more to come.

Black and white photo of the first class dining saloon aboard the SS Ile de France, 1927. The room is a vast open space, three decks high, with no visible columns except at the front (flanking a wall decorated with metal bas-relief). There are numerous tables all draped with white cloths, fine china, and stylish chairs that have a vaguely Art Deco style. The room is like a very large restaurant with a unified visual/design theme.

Today is the 111th anniversary of the departure of the Titanic from Southampton. So, here is a photo of a stateroom from that ship, room B-56. A magnificent Edwardian era interior, quite luxurious for the time (1912). Note the silk wall coverings, carpet (probably green, I think), and simple but ornate matching chairs. This was part of a first class suit. Probably very comfortable, for the five days of the voyage. #staterooms #Titanic #histodons #oceanliners

Black and white photo of the bedroom of suite B-56 aboard the Titanic, April 1912. There is a bed with satin comforter, silk wall coverings with white paneled edging, and a small round table with matching chairs. A door is open to what appears to be a walk-in closet (probably not as deep as it looks).

Let's do some #staterooms. This is a first class cabin aboard the MV Britannic, one of the last of the White Star ships. Not its original appearance, this is after the post-World War II remodel of the ship which originally appeared in 1930. This is about 1950. Horrendous colors! You can still see hints of the original early 1930s Art Deco style, which had clearly faded by this time.
#histodons #oceanliners

Color photo of a first class stateroom aboard the MV Britannic, 1950. There are two beds with white shiny quilted comforters. wardrobes and walls covered in the same reddish-brown paneling, and ugly abstract flower illustrations over the beds. A porthole is visible on the wall to the right.

Here is a first class stateroom aboard the Italian liner SS Michelangelo, circa 1965. This was one of the last ships ever built with North Atlantic service primarily in mind. You can see this as an end point in passenger liner interior design. Honestly, doesn't look very comfortable, but I bet the Italian food on this ship was awesome! #histodons #staterooms #oceanliners

First class stateroom aboard the SS Michelangelo, 1965. There is a bed with very austere olive colored spread, a plain white wall, paneled closet doors, blocky modular furniture appropriate to the mid-1960s, and a chest of drawers, modernist style, with a vase of flowers on it. All the colors clash horribly.

First class stateroom aboard the Swedish liner MS Kungsholm, 1926. This is a rare color photo from the pre-WWII North Atlantic passenger liner era. Twin beds pushed together is very Scandinavian. Fresh flowers are a nice touch. This liner just barely predated the Art Deco craze, but still has a very clean, modernistic look in its décor. This would have been a nice ship to travel on in the mid-20s. #histodons #oceanliners #staterooms #ships

Color photo of a stateroom aboard the Kungsholm, 1926. The "double" bed is actually two single beds with separate frames pushed together. There is a small round table at the end of the beds, with a vase of fresh flowers. The room includes a mirror (to make it look larger), mahogany paneling, and a tasteful chair.
