🎉 The first year of real Open Source collaboration in the railway sector - let's look back!

OK, actually it's been more than a year already, but we've finished our first actual report which was exciting for us. We had high hopes when we started #OpenRail, but onboarding 5 projects and enlarging the membership to 8 organisations from 2 continents has been nothing but a blast 💥

The hardest part is yet to come: establishing collaboration by #OpenSource as the default in the #railway industry 💪

"Putting the Railway Industry on the Open Source Track" - this is what Cornelius Schumacher is talking right now about at #FOSSbackstage.

He explains why #OpenRail Association has been founded, shares experiences of the first year in operation with the crowd, and presents our projects and opportunities for collaboration.

The Open Source movement within the railway sector grows 🎉
Three organisations joined the OpenRail Association: Infrabel from Belgium, Entur from Norway, and Flatland Association from Switzerland. They will contribute to the #OpenSource ecosystem and culture of collaboration we are creating together for the whole #railway and #transportation sector.

Curious about the details? Find the member organisations at #InnoTrans and check out the news: openrailassociation.org/news/2

Whoever thinks that #OpenSource doesn't play a vital role in railways and transportation, has been proven wrong at FOSDEM.

For the second time, team members of the OpenRail Association have coordinated the Railways and Open Transport devroom at #FOSDEM. 4 hours, 10 talks, constantly 100+ participants 🎉

➡ Have a look at the program and the recordings which we have listed in our report: openrailassociation.org/news/2

I guess we need a larger room next time. 20+ people waiting outside of the room, they weren't able to get in 😳

Great start into the day! The and devroom was already full before the programme started. We kick off the devroom with a talk about the open standards and open data in the transportation sector.

The upcoming talks will have a closer look at passenger simulation and long- and short-term planning before we go into the daily operations from different perspectives, especially the community.

Are you going to attend #FOSDEM this weekend? Then make sure to visit the *Railways and Open Transport* devroom on Saturday morning!

Some #OpenRail community members organise the second edition of this track at Europe's largest #OpenSource conference. It's an honour to welcome many great speakers and we are looking forward to a fruitful exchange among the wider ecosystem.

We are thrilled to announce that there will be a second edition of the "Railways and Open Transport" devroom at #FOSDEM 2024, organised by part of the #OpenRail community 🎉

Until 1 December, we are looking for session proposals covering #OpenSource projects and initiatives related to #railways and #PublicTransport.

#DeutscheBahn have published their #OpenSource manifesto, following the great example of other organisations. This manifesto signifies the role of #FOSS at #DB to employees and the outside word. I see a lot of promising developments at DB and I hope to see more through their commitment to organisations like the #OpenRail association. opensource.deutschebahn.com/op

Great news from ! We have published an Open Source Manifesto and our brand-new landing page that shows our committment and engagement in :

This isn't only nice words. It's a strong sign internally and externally that we are taking Free and Open Source Software seriously, that we strive to collaborate widely, and that we will work hard to keep up with these goals 💪

the license aren't right? I'm not necessarily saying that is bad, but trying to figure out what we would be on the hook for. I think things like and are pretty clear, but not sure if there is anything that jumps from that "old school" machine learning framework to the new options

With the release of the BigCode 🎅 SantaCoder model on December 22, a new Open Responsible AI License (#OpenRAIL) emerged: The "CodeML Open RAIL-M v0.1 License"

This license has "responsible use" restrictions.

Such restrictions are incompatible with the terms of #GPL (which won't be an issue so long as the developers of this model have filtered out GPL licensed code from the training set, as they say they have).

I hadn't considered the "no additional restrictions" dimension of this until now.

Another more recent example comes to mind with Hugging Face. They operate a "forge-like" service for #AI and #ML hosting.

They are also advocating for the use of "Open and Responsible AI Licenses", aka "#OpenRAIL".

These aren't #OpenSource licenses (and I think that 🤗 does a good job to avoid calling works under those licenses "open source" -- not everyone does).

For such a new license, #OpenRAIL-M already has many variations in released artifacts. There's the OpenRAIL-M with upgrade requirements, originally used for #StableDiffusion 1.4 and 1.5, then OpenRail++-M used for StableDiffusion 2.0.

Now the "CodeML Open RAIL-M v0.1 License".

License Proliferation (e.g., ⬇️ from @sogrady) has been a real problem for the #FreeSoftware and #OpenSource software community, especially in remixing components with mutually incompatible terms.

Dear Fellow Hackers,

"Stable Diffusion is a free and open source text-to-image AI".

Hold on to your papers: It's not the #FreeAndOpenSource you have come to know and love. It's not the #FOSS that created a bountiful commons that enables AI and ML to flourish.

Stable Diffusion 2.0 is a royalty free, publicly available model with responsible use restrictions detailed in the #OpenRAIL++-M license.

I think you could call it "Responsible AI" or "Ethical Source".
