#progressiveWebApps

I wish more websites had installable Progressive Web App versions. Using the PWAs for Mastodon, Libby, and Mauril makes me desperately want it for all my other apps. Discord in particular was really upsetting to find out they don't have a PWA, the interface already works perfectly good in a mobile web browser.

I might be late to the party, but what the fuck is this?

Sure, Progressive Web Apps (PWA) have always been a shitshow on iOS, but has Apple essentially killed them now?

Screenshot from iOS (simulator) with a modal dialog after trying to launch a PWA installed to the home screen: "Open "PTR Demo" in Safari? In your region, web apps now open in your default browser."

Options are "Cancel" and "Open". Open launches the app in Safari (not as PWA), Cancel only dismisses the dialog, does not open the app)

Had to install Chromium in Gentoo to use a web based Minidisc program. Then found out an electron based appimage was available. Appimage works so I choose to use it instead of maintain a Chromium install.

Would be nice if there was a way to take these Progressive Web Apps and package them in Electron as a stand alone program instead of being hyper dependent on Chromium.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

I recently upgraded my laptop to the most recent version of the most popular Linux operating system, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. It’s free software, costing $0. With Ubuntu’s free Expanded Security Maintenance, it will be supported until April 2034, at which point it can be easily upgraded at no cost. It offers the best user experience for me, with a vast choice of apps and programs […]

I've updated and significantly reworked @petele's article on the Get Installed Related Apps API.

developer.chrome.com/docs/capa

Since Chromium 140, the API now also supports web apps on desktop platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS).

I've been excited about since the very beginning--the ability to "install" a website to give it all the capabilities of a native app is all I've ever wanted my whole career.

So I really hate to admit that I've stopped using them entirely.

It's just not worth the confusion when you switch between browsers; is this installed in Chrome or Opera? Is this version of Spotify the native app, or will my widevine settings in @brave make it stop working?

What if your website could behave like an app - without making users download anything?

Meet Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) - the future of frictionless digital experiences.
• Instant loading.
• Works offline.
• No app store barriers.
• Looks and feels just like a native app.

From eCommerce to enterprise tools, PWAs are redefining reach and speed — and helping brands skip the app store line altogether.

Confirmed: Web apps for Firefox are coming

Firefox users have to do without Progressive Web Apps on the desktop. However, the developers are working on this – but are not committing to a timetable.
