Common puffballs (Lycoperdon perlatum)

#nature #naturephotography #mushroom #fungus #fungi #puffballs
A photograph of a cluster of common puffballs. To the left is a largish puffball leaning a bit to the right and to the right is a similar sized leaning left, with a larger one out of focus behind it. just next to the one to the right is a very small puffball.

The left puffball is surrounded by green moss and in the foreground are varoius small debris in the form of twigs and needles of pine and possibly spruce.

The background is blurry and dark green to black.

New paper! With genus-level phylogenetics we (Meilinda Sulastri, Andre Rodigues, Ester Gaya) merged the puffball family Lycoperdaceae with Agaricaceae and revive/assign new sections to the family!

Peeling puffballs (𝘓𝘺𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮) from last week's hike:

#FungiFriday #fungi #puffballs #mushrooms #FungusFriday

Spherical mushrooms covered in little spines so that the mushrooms look like little white pom poms growing in the dirt. They are growing in two clusters, with the cluster on the right more tightly grouped together and the cluster on the left a bit more dispersed.

Puffballs (𝘓𝘺𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘰𝘯 sp.) and two-colored boletes (𝘉𝘢𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳), from July 2021:

#FungiFriday #mushrooms #fungi #puffballs #boletes

Two different species of mushrooms growing together on the ground. On the left are several small pale spherical mushrooms with holes on top, whereas to the upper right are a group of much larger, more classically "mushroom"-shaped mushrooms, with convex caps that are predominantly red with some yellow bits. The patch the mushrooms are on is mostly dark soil, but they are surrounded by bright green leaves.

You have to love the fall season as it is not only stunning with the vibrant foliage colors but is also time for foraging for mushrooms. It was quite a thrill to spot these Giant Puffballs, in Guelph Ontario Canada, as you can't always find them in the forest. They are edible and taste terrific when sliced and fried in butter, yum!

Two Puffballs in the fallen leaves on forest floor in fall

Lycoperdon perlatum. Gem-Studded Puffball. Saprotrophic on the forest floor. These gasteroid fungi are typically edible when fresh and completely white throughout when sliced open from top to bottom…just as long as there isn’t an embryonic mushroom of another sort waiting inside (often the gills and stalk of an Amanita button, a common puffball misidentification).

#Puffballs. Spotted these three today rising out of the leaf litter like tiny sizewell reactors. Think they are pigskin puffballs but I’m no expert. In the second photo I like how the stump is becoming overwhelmed by fungi; a nice, healthy image of decomposition. #fungi #sporespondence.

Three yellowish puffball fungi are huddled together in the leaf litter. The surface of one has burst open, revealing a black interior packed with spores. The surface of a tree stump is largely covered by fungi. The predominant type is bracket fungi, in combinations of colours brown, orange, black, green and white. The very top of the stump is crowned by candlesnuff fungi.

For #FungiFriday I present these #PuffBalls growing on a log in the forest near the Skyland Lodge in Shenandoah #NationalPark. There is a little moss as well, so it might be a #Mosstodon pic too.

A clump of four whiteish gray brown puffball mushrooms emerges from a decaying log on the forest floor. There’s some moss and fallen leaves on the log.

For #FungiFriday have a looksie at the time a few weeks ago when I found a bunch of Onion Earthball (#Scleroderma cepa) #mushrooms! Here's one I was documenting for #iNaturalist that *spontaneously* exploded ashy black spores all over my arm and chest (not in the face, thankfully😅).

The Onion Earthball is popped open and has sprayed spores all over my body and arms.A fully ruptured Onion Earthball in my hand. You can see how thick the outside "skin" is. There are still many ashy black spores inside the mushroom.A closeup of a large puffball mushroom called an Onion Earthball in my hand. It is very leathery and wrinkled.

I didn't expect action shots when looking for mushroom photos, but there you go.
(Each photo shows an offwhite puffball mushroom exploding, releasing a cloud of dark brown spores.)
