"Thao graduated from Como Park Senior High School in St. Paul and headed to the University of Minnesota to study computer science. But subject and student did not mesh well. He’d get headaches just reading about computers, Thao recalled."

In Springfield, MA until Monday for the Northeast Natural History Conference (NENHC). Anyone else?

Any locals wanna recommend a good greenspace to visit? (Edit) It looks like tomorrow, Friday is the only non-rainy day during my stay. I'm on the wait list for a field trip to Vermont in the afternoon, but I'll get out one way or another.

I'll be at #Esquimalt #GorgeWaterway /Kinsmen park in a few hours to join the invasive green crab monitoring team. It's another trapping/netting day & I'll be documenting some of the project's work.

[ Since 2022, we have participated in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ European Green Crab Monitoring Project. European green crabs are a destructive invasive species that removes eelgrass very efficiently, destroying habitat for everything else in the Gorge. Unfortunately, we caught adult European green crabs in the Gorge for the first time in August 2024 through our monitoring program.

We are working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Peninsula Streams Society to remove as many as possible before the problem worsens. To prevent the spread of European Green Crabs, make sure to clean, drain, and dry off any watercraft according to BC Invasives. ]

Part of the ongoing #rewilding & #nature #restoration work I do with fellow caring local #environmentalists is planting #EelGrass in areas where we are trying to bump up #ocean #oxygen levels & bring back more #biodiversity in the seas. Eel grass purposeful planting into ocean beds(with divers) & beaches at low tide is an essential part of restoring biodiversity back to human damaged areas in ocean.

I just uploaded my 2,000th "Species" (Taxon) on iNaturalist: a Red-shouldered Bug, Jadera haematoloma, that landed on a table at the Kingsland Wildflower Festival last weekend.

It's my 1,836th "Wild" Species, i.e.: not captive nor cultivated, e.g.: plants in my garden.

I'm now up to:
- 1,999 "Species"
- 17,727 Observations

inaturalist.org/observations?p

I was in Colorado for a week earlier this month: 67 new-to-me species so far. As identifications come in I expect this to increase, and push me over 2,000 species.

Roughly 1,000 #volunteers armed with the #iNaturalist app on their smartphones are #documenting as many #nature species as possible along the #USMexico border in May. Uploading photos to the app helps #identify #plants & #animals & records the coordinates of the location.

The hope is the information could lead to more protections for the region's natural richness, which is overshadowed by news of drug trafficking & migrant smuggling.
