The road to the tiny hamlet of Marion in northwest Montana is lined with the thick trees of the Flathead National Forest, with modern homesteads of trailers and modest homes dotting clearings here and there. Outside a timber frame café called the Hilltop Hitching Post, one of the only gathering spots for Marion’s population of less than 1,200, hunter Terry Zink pulled up in a dusty, well-used F-150 pickup and got out wearing a camo jacket against the early September chill, and a ball cap atop wire-rimmed glasses.
Zink, 57, is a third-generation houndsman who hunts big game, including mountain lions and bears. He also owns an archery target business. He’s a rural Montanan whose way of life and livelihood depend on public lands.
He led me into the Hilltop, where half the people inside knew his name, to a corner where we sat drinking diner coffee. “You won’t meet anyone more conservative than me, and I didn’t vote for this,” Zink said.

An advocate for wildlife conservation in the West, his livelihood depends on public lands.“This” is the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) deep cuts earlier this year to federal public lands agencies’ funding and to the staff at those agencies who administer that funding and steward public lands and wildlife.
Zink voted for Trump but said he doesn’t agree with everything the president does. Zink clarifies he calls himself a “conservative” over calling himself a “Republican.” He doesn’t like Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric. “I prefer common sense in the middle,” he said.
He believes wolves need to be hunted to manage their numbers; abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest and to protect the mother’s life; and he’s an ardent Second Amendment supporter. He’s also a passionate advocate for public lands and wildlife. And the cuts have, frankly, ticked him off.
He is vocal not just about protecting public lands but also about protecting the staff at those agencies. “We have to listen to our wildlife biologists. We have to be strong advocates for those people,” Zink said.

Today in Labor History December 11, 1905: Workers and students rose up against the Russian government and established the Shuliavka Republic in Kiev, Ukraine. The uprising lasted for four days. The majority of the protesting workers were from the Shuliavka district. On the first day of the uprising, the Council of Workers' Deputies published their manifesto demanding the abolition of absolute monarchy, freedom of speech and assembly, social services, amnesty for political prisoners, national emancipation of Ukrainians, Poles and Jews, and the immediate end to the Jewish pogroms. The workers also demanded pensions and better medical services. On December 15, Shuliavska was surrounded by the Imperial Russian Army and local authorities. The police came in, made mass arrests and confiscated any weapons they found. 1 month later, Bolsheviks led another revolt in Kiev.

Today in Labor History December 8, 2008: A revolt broke out in Greece two days after the police murdered Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a fifteen-year-old student. Workers, unemployed people, students and immigrants participated. They built barricades, attacked police stations, set government buildings on fire. At one town, high school students burned all the police cars at their local police station. In Patras, they took over a television station and began broadcasting their own message. The uprising lasted until December. Ultimately, the state prosecuted the cops who murdered Grigoropoulos.

Today in Labor History November 24, 1927: On Thanksgiving Day, California troops battled 1,200 inmates when Folsom prisoners revolted. 7 prisoners and 2 guards died. 5 other prisoners were later hanged. The revolt began as an attempted prison escape. Governor Young contacted Colonel Wallace A. Mason, Commanding Officer of the 184th Infantry, who deployed all Sacramento units in his regiment. Soon after, troops were also deployed from Yuba City, Marysville, Stockton, Woodland and Lodi. Two tanks were sent from Salinas.

Today in Labor History November 23, 1733: A slave insurrection began on St. John, in what was then the Danish West Indies. 150 African slaves from Akwamu, in present-day Ghana, revolted against the plantation owners. It was one of the earliest and longest slave rebellions in the Americas, lasting into August, 1734. During the revolt, they captured the fort in Coral Bay and controlled of most of the island, including other Africans, who they intended to use as their own slave labor. However, the Akwamu were eventually defeated by a larger and better-armed militia of French and Swiss troops from Martinique.
