Yesterday on my long drive, I passed a large lake. All water now, with ripples, where two months ago it was frozen solid, with ice fishing happening.

In the Northeastern US, the water stiffens and loosens--that's its pattern. Whereas in the Amazon, it rises and falls, floods and abates.
