@servo I'd still like an update on the decisions about using AI in code submissions. Can someone respond to that please?

This month in Servo: color inputs, SVG, embedder JS, and more!

programming.dev/post/32439779

@gemlog @mpjgregoire To add in a fresh review by my entirely subjective personal marking scheme, I can say that #Servo fails pretty horribly:

  1. 〰️ Theme is ugly as sin, DPI scaling ignored, but it does actually use my window borders, so petulantly I'm giving it the same marks as Firefox here ;)
  2. ❌ Couldn't test downloading/uploading dialogue window
  3. ❌ Couldn't test results of downloading
  4. ❌ The best I could get was some sites it would give the website title in the titlebar. Every website however showed an unchanging white blank page. Zero websites were usable!
  5. ✔️ Best browser tried yet actually, it goes to valid .lan, .local, and .blah.internal addresses when I type them in sans protocol identifier and press enter
  6. ❌ I mean I just assume they don't work but obviously couldn't try
  7. ❌ The cert for the internal CA at work is in my trusted certs on this system, but Servo doesn't care, throws a certificate error (which I know because the one thing that works, the KDE-supplied window borders, shows a changing title that says "Certificate error" lol)

I'm going to give it a few extra marks for getting test 5 so right, so I'll say it gets 1.9 stars out of 5 ;)

Wait, I just tried to close it, and it is not responding to me clicking the X in the titlebar, I had to resort to killall servo, knocking it down to 1.7.

is there a list of things Servo supports compared to other browser engines? :repost_ok:

On my way home from the @nluug #vj2025. Met a lot of cool people, and had some great #discussions. Loved the #Ladybird presentation, but I was already quite interested in both Ladybird and #Servo. Also some nice discussions about my topic of not using #BigTech.

FFmpeg developers aren't satisfied with the new Rust-based rav1d decoder, say that "Rust is so good you can get paid $20k to make it as fast as C":

Canonical, Zerodha, Posit, Sanity, Tideways and other companies join the Open Source Pledge to fund FOSS projects:

(Canonical and a random Indian financial company funding FOSS projects? Is it just me who has some bad feelings about this? 🤔️)
(Why would a bunch of for profit corporations support FOSS projects, if not because they want something out of them?)

Alrighty, It's not published on pypi yet, but I'm mostly done with pyservo42c. It's a python UART interface to the MKS Servo42C closed-loop stepper. No external dependencies, good test coverage.

These are great little widgets that provide easy step/dir/en and UART control of a stepper motor.

github.com/tjhowse/pyservo42c

All that remains is writing a little wrapper to interface directly to a com port, and then pypi publication.

#Servo forbids the AI driven contributions, and its actually the first project I know to do so. Do you know more project with such rule in Contribution guideline?

The #Servo browser connects to YouTube on startup due to the default start page servo.org managing to connect to YouTube and Google's ad network without even having a video on it.

And people wonder why I have trust issues and refuse to take many projects that claim to bring us a private and independent web seriously.
