This guy again. He was a lousy spade before, but he's a fantastic bark spade now.

Damn good workout though, especially hacking the knots off. Had to resharpen twice.

Works so well though. And it's fun! Like pressure washing. Can't stop. Look at all those peels on the ground!

I asked for a volunteer and one old spade did not step back fast enough, so it got an appointment with Mr. Angle Grinder to become a bark spade.

Cut off a third of the blade and ground a ~30° bevel on it, then sharpened it.

Works much better than the carving axe. I'll have to find a longer handle for better ergonomy, but happy with it already!

A spade with part of the blade cut off and the bottom edge ground at an angle on the concave side and sharpened. There's still old dirt on the rest of the blade.

The new bark spade demonstrating its peeling powers on a recently felled apple tree, chewing off the bark in long strips to reveal the wood beneath. The new bark spade gleams with pride and is happy to have volunteered.

The log is now peeled further and the spade has successfully cut into and away a few left branch stubs, demonstrating its cutting power.

Small Groundbreaker Spade by Burgon & Ball digging into clay soil

Sometimes a pictorial imagination is a drawback when reading, especially when reading a book written in a language not quite the same as one's own. I just wasted time mindwatching someone awkwardly dig a garden with a shovel, while trying to work out why they didn't use a #spade. It quite broke the thread of the story.
