Driving… šŸŽļø

Due to several reasons, I was "late" getting my license at 20. But I passed both exams (the theory questions and the actual driving) in one try. Didn't have any theory questions wrong... So I thought I didn't do too badly. I've been driving ever since. I've been in one accident so far (and that was enough), which was my fault, according to the laws. But, the other driver needed to follow a course after it, as it seems he kept causing these kinds of accidents, so the insurance felt like he was doing it on purpose... But yeah, I've been doing OK so far. […]

A heartwarming scene featuring a brown dog with distinctive large ears poking its head out of the rear window of a white car. The car is moving along a highway, surrounded by lush greenery. In the background, gently rolling hills dotted with trees stretch into the distance under a clear, vibrant blue sky. The dog's expression is a mix of curiosity and contentment, as if enjoying the breeze and the passing scenery. Adding a playful touch to the image, the word "Driving..." is displayed in a bold, stylized purple and yellow font at the bottom, evoking a sense of freedom and adventure.

Biodiversity under the wheels near Repton

"ANGELA Wallace is one of many people upset about the number of koalas being killed on local roads....Little has been done to mitigate these deaths, with another koala recently killed near Repton. ā€œNo wonder our iconic koala (dunggirr) is endangered with our roads as ā€˜killing zones’, deforestation [causing a] loss of habitat, and them trying to survive extreme weather events such as fires and floods.ā€

"She pointed out that where the koala died, the wildlife fence nearby was thickly overgrown with lantana and a nearby underpass was almost impenetrable due to a mass of lantana."

If an injured, sick or orphaned native animal is found, WIRES can be contacted on 1300 094 737.

Picture getting caught doing 64kph in a 50kph area. Then imagine being so stubborn you'd fight an $80 speeding ticket all the way to the Supreme Court, and lose most of the way.

Aucklander Peter Prescott racked up $34,000 in legal fees and was declared bankrupt when he couldn’t pay them.

The lessons? Don't speed in 50kph zones and don't pursue a hopeless case through the courts. That's only for wealthy folk.

An increase in dorsal fin injuries

"In the last two months four dolphins have been found with their dorsal fins either injured or completely severed.I'm not saying what object it was, but it's a definitely a watercraft or a propeller that's severed the dorsal fin."

April school holiday season in NSW is also koala breeding season.

Car crash stats from the Northern Rivers:
"From May 2023 to May 2024, 71 koalas were hit by vehicles, of which just 13 were rehabilitated and released back to the wild. Unfortunately, 80% of koalas hit by vehicles last year did not survive the impact. Our statistics show that there has been a 15% increase in the number of koalas admitted to our Northern Rivers Koala Hospital as a result of car strikes than the previous year. In a single week in 2023 six koalas died from vehicle strikes and from June to December 2022, Friends of the Koala, were called to 42 car strikes across the Northern Rivers region. This is devastating."

"Urban environments are stressful and disorienting for koalas. They experience both acute and chronic stress trying to find sufficient food and negotiating roads, domestic dogs, pools and fences."

The deadly 3,000kg car bloat trend

Australians are obsessed with SUVs and huge utes, but experts say they are making our roads deadlier

"Also in recent years, Australia has spectacularly failed at its mission of bringing down road deaths and serious injuries. Speed – and their proclivity to be driven faster – and overall height make larger vehicles far more likely to kill or cause serious injury when hitting pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and smaller cars."

"Newstead warns how this mentality can lead to an arms race to larger cars for those wanting to bolster their own safety. Crucially, if a driver can’t make eye contact with a pedestrians, ā€œthey are going to drive as though they aren’t thereā€"

The new #AI equipped #ANPR #camera #vans using tech developed in #Australia will be deployed by #WestMidlands #Police - they can apparently spot #speeding , seatbelt violations, #mobilephone use and even #DUI ! (probably by monitoring those who are driving erratically and not keeping to correct lanes)

Vans cost £47 000 each (cheaper than I had expected, a plain new van (without any Police equipment is £35k) #RoadSafety #Surveillance #UK
