This leaves individuals, who may be stateless, refugees, not registered at birth, victims of child abuse or victims of cult abuse, on the edge of society with no way to earn access to what most people take for granted.

In comparison, the self-declaration of identity does not require third party permission. Individuals can define their own name, culture and personal ties, and are the authority over their own lives.

Millions of people worldwide have no access to government ID, which makes it difficult to access necessities like work, housing and healthcare. Despite issuing laissez-passer passports in the past, neither the UN nor the Red Cross offer substitute IDs today, and nation-states mostly refuse to issue stateless passports or certificates of identity.

@mort It isn't. Part of the #IPv6 design goals was to offer a fully #stateless way for #address autoconfiguration. With 64bit host parts, this is possible (by using the MAC address to derive a host part). Collisions in the scope of a single subnet are practically impossible (unless you actively fiddle with MAC addresses).

Of course, you also have to take the large internet routers into consideration, with many thousands of entries in their routing table. Requiring them to match 64bits instead of just 32 (with IPv4) was already a massive requirement.

Actually, without considering the new auto-configuration, IPv6 would have done fine with just 64bit addresses overall.
