I love albums, but there’s something special about a great EP.

Something that provides a chunk of music under the 30-minute mark, and still feels complete and very enjoyable.

First time the camera in my iPhone takes a photo on its own!
Discovered this snap when I looked through the photo archive later that day.
I had no idea it could do this, but I guess this can happen on an «Apple-thing» when in late November you're out on the wild and icy roads in Telemark.
Still: I put my logo on it for the outtake.

Vannmerke likevel, for utsnittet 🤣

Sort of a screen dump, a section of it. The photo app on the iPhone where the exposure button and settings are seen on the left. The camera was facing straight down towards the ground, which is icy with clear tire tracks and scratches. My shoe sticks into the picture at the top.

Skoen min stikker inn i bildet i overkant.

Early winter's catch from the pollarding tree in Flatdal, everything I could wish for, now ready for the workshop in Skien this winter of 2025/26.

Cuts of thick branches from the large pollarding ash tree lie one above the other, stacked in a pile in the left of the picture. Some round, some cut lengthwise – the dark heartwood becomes clearly visible and exciting. The blanks lie in front of a frosty pile of crushed stone visible under a cracked green plastic tarpaulin. On the right, the last cut lies in an open van. An orange timber claw, a "bear" as we say, lies slung on top of it.

Polarding tree opens up

Photo series – continued snabelen.no/@frierbyen/1155778

I took out a middle section – It looked exciting as a blank for å serving dish.
This is why: Once upon a time, the people on the farm stopped harvesting this branch right here. Maybe the polarding continued higher up, maybe not.

In my blank, the end of the polarding time became visible. How long ago? I leave it to others to count the growth rings.

Styvingstre åpner seg

Billedserie – fortsettelse snabelen.no/@frierbyen/1155778

A centuries-old Pollarding tree, an ash, was felled by the storm Amy in October.
At a farm below Bindingsnuten by Nutheim in Flatdal.

I had the opportunity to pick up some goodies. Just above the rootstock are the best pieces – blanks for huge bowls from where the large branches split, with strong contrasts and fantastic play in the dark heartwood.

Photo of a moss-covered ash trunk lying uphill close to a car on the right. In the foreground the rootstock is cut across with the cut pieces up front. The closest of these shows the endwood of two large branches that gather into a larger branch closer to the rootstock. The dark brown heartwood dominates against the light yellow sapwood.

Lets try some early bird talk. The black flag.
I usually sit down and cough. Because sometimes I smoke too much cigarettes. I sing praises for God and I love the stillness of my region europe, that some of the point og getting early to bed, winterstime. So I know the most are deep asleep and I can work in the nocturnal. Its a blessing, because they dream. I smoke tobacco and drink water and coffee, really a blessing. Seems now I’ve healed. Bless.

The Dale, the Vally - let’s call the town the obvious and make a huge sign. No one is confused anymore, right?
I seem ironic, but I like the clarity.
Btw, the roads up and down are hairpinned curved and not for the lighthearted. (And not cycle friendly 😆)

Anyone wants to have a guess at what their (very) famous hotel is called?

The view: always different, always the same.

Sunrise and the tractor has turned round.

Picture taken at sunrise with horizontal bands of clouds lit up with pinks and purples. On the left and middle of the picture two piles of firewood and on the right a tractor next to a tree. There is a wire fence running across the lower half of the picture and diagonal cables crossing the upper part of the picture.

Into the void is the dreamers destiny. Chosen by God to be his people. He will follow us into the vast cosmos. And upward tilt eternal is he. The good choose God, free from burden, then.

A crow perched on a power cable in the light of a 360' sunset.

It waits for us to leave the balcony door that leads to our kitchen open, in case we leave the kitchen and forget to close the door.

We made that mistake once and have not yet repeated it. Not yet.

But the crow still waits, perched on the same spot on the power cable watching the door.

Clever birds those corvidae.

Sunset sky with diffuse colours on low cloud of the type you get with a 360 degree sunset. A crow is perched on one of the power cables that run across the top half of the picture. One of the posts supporting the power cables is visible on the left hand side of the picture.
Maybe one of the most esoteric stave churches of Norway; this is a meeting place for old valhalla Gods, Catholicism and protestantism. I must disappoint all dragon lovers though, but I can offer a santaclaus instead.

Norway has a friendly fight with Finland about the whereabout of Santa Claus, but maybe we have missed a golden opportunity to really place him where he belongs, in Telemark and at Eidsborg stave churche [toungue in cheek]. This is one of 2000 churches dedicated to St Niculas, i.e. the saint who we think inspired to Santa Claus. Midsummer (Jonsokk) is celebrated here by lifting the statue of St Nicholas (Nikulsvandring) from the church, and have a walk with him around the close lake. Or as we say in Norwegian “De dødes tjern” (!) as one of our most famous authors, André Bjerke, sat close to the lake and wrote a classic.

The stave church itself is built between approx. 1150-1180, and have changed many times later. The original statue of St Niculs is a copy, the original is at a museum in Oslo.

I passed here out of season and all I saw was a well held church.

Wood is the Nordic language.
Sick, I know, but one of my favourite smells is tar. All Norwegian stav churches are coated in it, and it smells soooo good.

On my way home I drove past the largest of the 28 stave churches we have, Heddal from about 1200.
It is said to have been built from four tools.

Yesterday: first frost since the middle of August. Almost monochrome.

The picture was taken with Nikon Coolpix 5600 rescued from an elderly relative, repaired enough to be used again.

The last of the pumpkins and courgettes have been harvested and the plants left exposed in the garden to be taken by the next frost. It saves me having to cover the plants every night.

A rural view of a house and trees with hills and mist in the background and frozen fields in front of the house. Almost monochrome. Wires cut across the foreground of the picture.
