I'm going to talk about calendars again.

Web pages and popualr books often state that calendars can be solar or lunar, and lunisolar calendars combine both types. This is exactly backwards. Every polity with any sort of state-like organisation starts off with a lunisolar calendar, which may drop the lunar correlation to become purley solar. (There is only one purely lunar calendar, and it too is descended from a lunisolar ancestor).

To those who observe, you are marked on #AshWednesday with a cross of #hope, not just #repentance. May you find grace in your Lenten #fast.

Western Christians begin #Lent February 18, 2026.
Orthodox Christians begin #GreatLent February 23, 2026.
Both count back from their #Easter date, but each uses a different calendar to approximate te #vernalequinox (Gregorian vs. Julian)

A somber 19th‑century interior scene of a church or chapel where people stand in a quiet line. At the center, an elderly, stooped man in a long beige coat leans on a cane and approaches a priest in white robes, who stands behind a dark wooden railing and reaches out a hand offering ashes. Around them, several women and children in dark, modest clothing watch, including a little girl in a red hooded cape who stands beside a taller woman in a gray dress on the right; both have ashes on their foreheads. The background is filled with wooden paneling and columns, and the floor is patterned with black‑and‑white tiles, giving the painting a subdued, devotional atmosphere.

To those who celebrate, whether you say #MardiGras or #ShroveTuesday, remember #Lent is coming.

#Food traditions, like #pancake suppers, consume eggs, sugar, and fat that were forbidden during Lent and might otherwise have been wasted.

A densely packed 16th‑century village carnival scene in a town square, shown from above. Dozens of small, brightly dressed figures crowd the muddy open space between brick houses and a large gray church on the right. People eat, drink, play games, dance, wrestle, and parade in costume. In the lower center, a man in colorful clothes rides two large beer barrels, while nearby others cook over a fire and sell food from stalls. At the bottom right, a figure dressed as a mock king in pale blue robes sits on a small wheeled platform surrounded by revelers. Scattered props—buckets, masks, musical instruments, benches, and carts—dot the square, and background streets and buildings are filled with more people watching or joining the festivities, creating a busy, chaotic festival atmosphere.

23/25 🧵 Wittgenstein would say: "The limits of my train schedule are the limits of my world." If the train from Frankfurt (Oder) is on time, the logic of the end is preserved. We don't need a moral compass when we have a synchronized watch and a Russian accent.

3 men richly dressed in tunics, hose, shoes, cloaks, and peaked red hats offer gifts. The one farthest to the right has white hair and a beard. The one farthest to the left has black hair and a beard. The middle is beardless with brown hair. In the background, green palm trees stand out against a golden sky and the names Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar. A small 8 point star is in the upper right. At their feet, there is a carpet of green grass with some flowers and shrubs. At the very bottom is a geometric boarder.

Two images of the Earth. The upper shows the reflected solar radiation on the winter solstice 2004 with the most light reflected in the southern polar region and the least in the northern polar region. The lower shows the reflected solar radiation on the summer solstice 2005 with the most light reflected in the northern polar region and the least in the southern polar region. In both images, the mid-latitudes show a complex gradient of swirling reflected solar radiance depending on latitude and surface conditions.

The December solstice — beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere & summer in the southern — was a few minutes ago, at 10:01 EST (15:01 GMT). Enjoy your winter & summer. ;)

For those who celebrate, Io, Saturnalia!

Running from December 17 to ~23, #Saturnalia celebrated a #Roman Golden Age, when #Saturnus ( #Saturn) ruled & taught his people #argriculture and civilized behavior, by reversing the normal social order.

For those who celebrate, chag urim sameach. May your Hanukkah and home be full of light.

Hanukkah begins on 25 Kislev and lasts 8 days. Over a 19-year cycle, the Jewish calendar uses variable-month years and variable-length months to achieve both solar and lunar alignment. This year, Kislev has 30 days, so Chanukah ends on 2 Tevet.

The Gregorian calendar is only aligned with solar cycles. This year, 25 Kislev began at sunset on 14 December and runs until sunset on 22 December.

Does anyone know what time it is?

Time is a human construction.

Clocks were invented so you knew when the pub opened.
