The “Eye of Sauron” spotted in deep space

👁️ Okay, so the plasma jet in the blazar PKS 1424+240 isn't on a tower in Mordor, and it's not the fire-rimmed eye of a powerful tyrant. But if you don't think of Sauron's eye when you see the image released today, throw the first ring.

📡 Behind this deep image of the jet at unparalleled resolution are 15 years of ultra-precise radio observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and an international research team.

Doch wer bei dem heute veröffentlichten Bild nicht an Saurons Auge denken muss, der werfe den ersten Ring.

Today I used a phrase to describe the #VLA, #VLBA and #GBT that distilled what these instruments are for me in a new way, "vast engines of discovery". It is bouncing around in my head tonight like a song I can't get rid of, and I am grateful to have stood in their shadows.

Cleaned out my work office as I'm working from home for a while, these are souvenirs dating from my time as a #vlba correlator operator, '94-98. These days they use disk packs, once they retired the tape drives I kept these two for the feels.

The inner structure of the jet of the nearby #quasar 3C 273 – the region where the jet is shaped – is revealed by very long baseline interferometry (#VLBI) observations at 3mm with #ALMA, and the Global Millimetre VLBI Array (#GMVA, consisting of the US Very Long Baseline Array (#VLBA) and European #telescopes).
