Today I cut down a tree next to the house that was leaning toward the house.

Some engineering was involved.

First photo shows the start, 2nd shows the result.

The first few comments show the steps I took.

A standing dead tree next to the house also leans toward the house. I need to cut it down, but I also need to make it fall in the opposite direction...away from the house.

The end result. The tree fell where I wanted it to.

Gliders need help to get airborne.

Here's an update I pulled from an SSA (Soaring Society of America) newsletter:

"The SSA awarded several grants for projects and Bill Daniels of the White Sands Soaring Association provided an update on how grant money is advancing their winch project."

"Our thinking is shifting to power electronics, data capture and temperature management. The big battery pack which can power 40 to 50 launches on a charge is also sitting on the shop floor. The inverters are in hand. The load pins (a kind of load cell) serve as axles for the upper pulleys while measuring forces on them. They are being made on the other side of the world and should arrive in a few weeks. Various connectors and other bits arrive daily. Since everything is liquid cooled and we operate in a hot climate, we will need robust temperature management systems which are still being designed."

I said I wouldn't, but I did.
A saw a 1.5 ton ratchet hoist. It will go nicely between the 0.75 ton and the 6 ton ratchet lever hoists I have.

The drain cover lifting key will be useful, I just need to make a second one, to match.

A 'small' trailer or pick up bed crane laid down in the car boot. It has a heavy upright post (on the right) with a square plate on the bottom, and an orange boom arm with a 12 volt winch on it (on the left).

We are off to the Community Workshop this morning, to reassemble an IBC container and get it fixed to its foundations so it can start collecting water.

Hopefully we'll return to find roofers on site.

I need to give the car windscreen a good clean and change the wiper blades. The smearing is awful and not safe.

A view of the back end of a large blue tractor at a steam rally. It has a huge winch low down between the big rear agri tyres. Around the winch and pointintg upwards is a massively heavy steel ground anchor. It is in the form of a letter H. The raised end has broad spade like points on it, while the pivoting end, at the bottom, is hinged to the tractor chassis somewhere near the winch. A length of chain with a hook on the end is draped over the cross beam of the anchor.

Ahead of the tractor is a steam traction engine being driven. There are people behind a barrier on the right.

Today I got up early,
And did the bins in the house.
Then warmed the car with an electric heater,
To defrost all the frozen bits.
Put on some laundry,
And repaired the broken food waste caddy lid.
Put the wheelchair in the car,
And took Mum to her appointment.
Picked up Sue from work,
Then had to relaunder the laundry.
Fell asleep for a bit,
I wonder if that was from eating GF bread?
Watched 1984 on TV,
Wrapped up in a Welsh blanket.
Had a chat with Mum,
She is concerned about the safety of the world.
She is channelling her inner Sarah Connor,
She may have a point.

I fell asleep for a moment on the sofa.
Laundry take two was better, most of it was clean enough. So it was dried and put away.
We are watching the 1954 BBC production of 'Nineteen Eighty Four' recorded from the TV a couple of days ago.
It's gone really cold indoors, I am feeling shivery.
Trying not to be tempted to hit the +1 hour boost on the heating controller.
Mum's ok downstairs, her heating is on 24/7 to keep her warm.

Edit: Hiding under a Welsh blanket now.

And redoing all the laundry!
There was an old cycling jacket in the wash, one we dug out in yesterday's clean up.
The white lining has disintegrated and now all the other laundry looks like it has snow on it! 🤦‍♀️

A 1/2 ton chain hoist branded Clark Strong Arm. It has an orange cylindrical drive gear body with a red hook on top. There is a mass of light chain for operating the gears, and a heavy chain with a red hook on the end, for lifting.

It isn't even 9am yet!
I have done our bins, and Mum's bins.
I have put laundry on to wash.
I have put a heater in the car to defrost it.
I have broken the lid on the food waste caddy.
I am now waiting for the glue to cure on the lid.

I got up early today, no idea why.

It is bin day:
Pink - food and garden waste
Brown - bottles, cans, and food tubs

I will be taking Mum to the hospital this morning.
Dressings and physio.

It is very cold and frosty outside, I am going to put a heater in the car for a while before we go out, it will defrost the windows and warm the cabin a bit.

Then, who knows. Still on holiday from work, but no roofer until Monday.

I came across #Searle on some #BBC television shows discussing #Wittgenstein and #Winch on #Language etc and later on some philosophy of science. Right on time for my undergraduate finals too. I've been a fan ever since (and that was a long time ago!)

UPDATE: Temporary solution. JEEP left behind. He's on his way home. Still need winch out solutions.

My boyfriend is stuck in the mud at Iron Mountain Resort in Dahlonega, GA with his son and needs a tow-out. Clearly, not your standard towing service.

If anyone knows anyone, please DM me their contact info. I'm at home and don't have the vehicle/equipment to help.
