Hotkeys, Workflows, and a Bit of Elbow Grease: Window Management in Alfred aka resizer – my window management workflow with Alfred

I got a lot of feedback about my move back to alfred. The #1 question was, “But what about window management?!” Fair point — it’s a baked-in feature in Raycast and works great. But with Alfred 5+ and its automation tasks, resizing windows is just one (very simple) workflow away. However, with the automation tasks support in Alfred 5+, resizing windows is one simple workflow away in Alfred too.

I even recently saw a video from Josean Martinez that talks about how they use raycast for window management. Solid stuff. However, if you are team Alfred, here’s how you build your own custom resize workflow:

🛠️ How to Build a Window Resizer in Alfred

  1. Open Alfred Preferences > Workflows
  2. Create a new workflow
  3. Add a Keyword input block. Choose a keyword for each window action. I use:
KeywordMeaninglhLeft HalfrhRight HalffttFirst two thirds (from left)ltLast thirds (from left)brqBottom Right QuartertrqTop Right QuarterMMaximize

4. If you’re a shortcut junkie like me, hook up some Hotkeys to each one:

KeywordHotkeylh[rh]ftt2lt3maxM

5. For each, add an Automation Task > Window Management, choose your desired action, and connect the nodes. Boom, you’re done!

Here’s what the final workflow might look like

Happy resizing, and welcome back to the Alfred side!

I JUST FOUND OUT THAT MS WINDOWS HAS THE SEND-TO-BACK WINDOW MANAGEMENT FEATURE
All this time, I could just press Alt+Esc and my window would be sent to the back! If only I knew this back when I was a Windows user.
What if Windows also has always-on-top?

Tidying up windows in macOS Sequoia? The new tiling feature adds gaps by default. Prefer edge-to-edge? Dive into Desktop & Dock settings to disable margins. Simple controls for a cleaner workspace.

I'm experimenting with a new window management setup using Loop and Swift Shift in place of Rectangle Pro. I find the window previews of Loop to be very useful and Swift Shift has more in the way of options than what the equivalent functionality in Rectangle offers.

And hey, they're both open source! 👨‍💻

I've finally decided to give the MacOS Sequoia window management an honest try so I've been re-creating many of my shortcuts from Rectangle.

A menu showing window management keyboard shortcuts in the MacOS system settings: Left (^⌥←), Right (^⌥→), Center (^⌥↩), Fill (^⌥↑), Top Left (^⌥U), Top Right (^⌥I), Bottom Left (^⌥J), and Bottom Right (^⌥K). Each shortcut uses Control (^), Option (⌥), and a directional key or letter.

Yesterday I read somewhere that #gnome48 is supposed to be going to include their new #windowmanagement, or rather their interpretation of #tiling. I'm excited about that! 🤓
By the way, do we know when the #stable version of #cosmic is expected to land roughly?
#linux never gets boring. 😜

Loop for macOS is pretty nifty when it comes to window management. (GPL-3.0 license)

Since I'm having a lot fun trying and configuring hyprland on my private box and have to use windows 11 at work, I decided to explore their window management features. I created a cheat sheet for the most important things :)

As I for various reasons use #macOS sometimes, I've been looking for a good way for #windowmanagement and I have tried several different solutions, Loop is the first one I actually like and it took me about one minute to learn. And it is even #opensource

Window Management on steroids for using Aerospace. (Might scratch someone's nerdy itch.)

(Josean Martinez does a *great* job explaining very technical things. IMHO, his channel is a must-watch for MacOS )

Apple showed at WWDC that the new MacOS could manage windows. You can try this and more now using the Snap app.

I would like to thank @rgriff for putting up with Many Questions this week. I may have found a suitable replacement for Divvy.

Not exactly what I wanted, but I’m thinking it will do.

I’ve been managing windows on my Macs with Divvy happily for … a decade? More? It fits my brain.

However, I’m in need of a modern app from a responsive developer that can manage windows in a similar fashion that combines a single keyboard shortcut to activate, and probably a graphical grid to divide up display space, where I use the pointer to select cells. Keyboard control of windows is secondary.

As an old cranky Linux user, I'm not exactly sure what my opinion on this article are (I've used tiling as well as traditional window managers a lot) but I really appreciate the detail and effort here. It's absolutely fascinating, and I can't wait to see where this goes:

I'm glad that Stage Manager got some attention on the iPad this year, even though I don't use an iPad, because it shows Apple is committed to the feature. I've been using it full-time on macOS since around this time last summer, and at this point I have no plans to go back.
