@Sturmflut I don't think that financing it torn apart from the language choice these days TBH.

Pure #Rust #zlib is a game changer on multiple grounds, compression can be added without linking FFI crates and cross-compiling C code (always a pain).

@osnews The #Rust implementation of #zlib is faster because someone is literally investing a quarter million Euros into optimizing it. It has little to do with the language chosen.

For another test image, zlib-ng is noticeably better than zlib.

At compression level 0: it's the same for all.
At compression level 1: zlib-ng is much worse than zlib.
At compression level 2-3: zlib-ng is slightly better than zlib.
At compression level 4-6: zlib-ng is even more slightly worse than zlib.
At compression level 7-9: about the same, zlib-ng ever so slightly better than zlib.

In more detail, zlib-ng has the same file sizes for compression level 0 and bigger files for level 1, but if you care about size, any higher level gives more or less the same file size, and zlib-ng is much faster.
