I was reading up on the original Kodak Photo CD format: it was wild. Chroma subsampling, of course, and then space was further saved by saving all of the various sizes of the photo (each photo could be viewed at different resolutions from thumbnail up to ~6MP) as a kind of interlacing scheme, and then #Huffman encoding on top of all that.
They also used a weird RGB scheme that allowed for some luminances to go above 100% in order to ("safely", heh) over-drive CRTs to produce really bright highlights.
Crazy stuff. Of course, this came out the same year as JPEG, so that's why they didn't just use that.
