Is there a good guide to troubleshooting #zeroconf / #bonjour ? I want to be able to address a Debian box on my local network from Windows using its hostname.local. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't (could not resolve hostname). I know how to troubleshoot lots of things, but not this.

I'm looking into #zeroconf (#mdns) right now. It's a neath concept, but it raises one question, how do you do encryption in a zeroconf network?
You don't have any trust anchor for the TLS certificates, so how?

P.S. If you made it this far and are wondering what wsdd2/WS-Discovery is all about: #Microsoft broke discovery of LAN devices when deprecating #SMB1.

WS-Discovery is their attempt to "fix" this, and is basically a competitor to #Bonjour / #Avahi / #Zeroconf (why couldn't MS have just used that?).

Unfortunately it means only devices implementing WS-Discovery are visible in Windows 10/11's network browser.

Fortunately there's a #FOSS utility named #wsdd2 that implements WS-Discovery on Linux.

I should also mention that, to get this working with my Nexus running #UbuntuTouch, I had to find a way to install avahi-daemon and libmdns to ensure that it could read the local address via #Zeroconf/#Bonjour. Works pretty well, though!

@wolf480pl Also, if using #mDNS / #Zeroconf / #Bonjour, make sure that any address resolution software or facility (such as #NSCd and #NSSwitch ) are set so that “minimal mDNS” is queried before DNS and returns when things are not found, before passing on to DNS of course. This is mostly the default, but it's better to check.

@wolf480pl I know little about #Nginx and nothing about this “ab”, but make sure that all the things make requests locally rather than “road-tripping” through wide address resolution. If you use local absolute addresses (either through local IP, #mDNS / #Zeroconf / #Bonjour) that is also fine as long as you don't expose these those in the webpage (because they won't work of course).
