Ok! The Linux Install Party is done!
I am declaring it a success!
So we only had one week to prepare for this and notify folks in town about it.
Last week we:
- Reserved a room at the local library
- Created the website (just a digital flyer site)
- Printed out release forms
- Made a handful of install USB ISOs with Linux Mint on it
- Made a post on the town's subreddit, a couple local discord channels, and told people to tell others
Not a lot of advertising at all.
But!
We had:
- 7 volunteers show up
- 5 groups of people who got Linux installed on their laptops (including one family: a mom and dad who were updating an old laptop for their 8 year old to use)
- And a good handful of people who stopped by to see what it was about, ask questions, and try out our demo laptops running Linux
All installs went chill. We even popped open one laptop to try and repair it (the keyboard and touch pad were borked. It turned out to be a hardware issue. We determined that an external keyboard and mouse were the quickest and cheapest fix. the laptop itself and linux install worked great)
When we werent installing things, we were hanging out, discussing linux and various open source projects and town groups and events and getting to know each other and generally just having a great time. I met new people from town and had some wonderful conversations. No masking, just being myself.
Folks really wanted this to happen again. We even had a librarian come in and ask when we were doing it again so they could bring their laptop to get Linux installed! Some of the volunteers were from the local college and said they had a great time and want to do these events at college and in town again.
We're shooting for next February (in conjunction with a repair cafe) and will try and hold it every month thereafter. Once its a regular monthly event and word of mouth and proper advertisement and posting flyers up in cafes etc, more people will show up and it will grow!
We also think we can make it an official library event (and not just a community event using library space). Once that happens it gets into the town events notification and really attracts folks!

Erinnert ihr euch, was ich zum erzwungenen Wechsel von #Windows 10 auf #Windows11 gesagt habe? Jahrelang haben sie Windows 10 ohne Versionssprung aktualisiert. Auch #Überwachung wie #Telemetrie (Fern»messung«) weiter ausgebaut. Ein großer Versionssprung ergibt nur Sinn, wenn etwas komplett neu gemacht werden soll. Und, es ist viel schlimmer, als ich es mir damals ausgemalt habe. #Microsoft übernimmt über unlösbare Verzahnung von Hardware und Betriebssystem per default deinen Rechner, #zerstört ggf. andere Systeme wie #Linux auf einer anderen Festplatte, ohne dich zu informieren, zwingt dich in die #Microsoftcloud, sammelt zentral in seiner #Cloud und nie wieder löschbar deine Konfiguration unter einer in die #Hardware gebrannten ID, auch, ob du Linux auf deinem PC installiert hast, und stellt diese Daten (das »#Attest«) beliebigen Apps im Internet #abfragbar zur Verfügung. #Screenshots jede Minute ergänzen die Features, bislang noch lokal.

Auch ohne Windows-11-Unterstützung ist ein Computer aber noch lange kein Müll, denn oft lassen sich alternative Betriebssysteme installieren. So ist etwa Linux auf praktisch jedem PC und Laptop der letzten 15 Jahre lauffähig und bietet alles, was ein Computer heutzutage braucht.
Anders als vor einigen Jahren gestaltet sich mittlerweile auch die Installation deutlich einfacher. Die Aktion „End of 10“ bietet zusätzlich kostenlose Unterstützung für Interessierte, die Hilfe benötigen – auch in Österreich.

In the video it's just Ubuntu, but a good Linux can be installed instead by whoever ends up getting the computer.
As Microsoft chose to hit the world with an unnecessary environmental devastation and additional economic hardship for regular folks during these still ongoing difficult economy by deciding that hundreds of millions of Windows 10 computers were "too old" just because Microsoft ends Windows 10 support on October 14th, even though the computers are actually absolutely fine and even could have run Windows 11 if Microsoft hadn't put artificial user-hostile rules in place,
so people just install Linux instead and the computers can be used in many cases for probably several years more.
Personally, I haven't had as many random non-techie people ask me how to get and install Linux since the late 1990s.
The three Rs of environmentalism: Reduce (initial consumption), Reuse (what's already out there), and Recycle what actually can't be reused.

Heute steht die Entscheidung von Innenminister Dobrindt und Justizministerin Hubig zur Position Deutschlands bzgl. der Chatkontrolle an. 👀 Und wenn Deutschland umknickt, wird die Chatkontrolle wohl oder übel EU-weit kommen.
D.h. sämtliche digitale Kommunikation muss durch Onlinedienste auf missliebige Inhalte gescannt werden – Ende-zu-Ende-Verschlüsselung hin oder her. Das betrifft also auch eigentlich vertrauenswürdige Dienste wie Signal, Threema und Co. Im Grunde sind sämtliche digitale Kommunikationsdienste Ziel der neuen Richtlinie: private digitale Kommunikation wird in der EU nicht mehr möglich sein.
Hunderte Menschen aus Wissenschaft und Forschung haben einen gemeinsamen Brief gegen die Chatkontrolle unterzeichnet. Obwohl es vorgeblich um das Aufspüren Missbrauchsdarstellungen von Jugendlichen und Kindern gehen soll, stellt sich selbst der Kinderschutzbund ausdrücklich gegen die vorgeschlagene Chatkontrolle. ⚠️ Schnell werden derartige Gesetze auf andere Inhalte ausgeweitet. Und während das Vorhaben offensichtlich gegen die Grundrechte-Charta der EU verstößt, nehmen sich die Sicherheitsbehörden und Innenminister*innen übrigens selbst von diesen Maßnahmen aus. 🙄
