The flowers are fading and winter is coming to Montreal
Made a career as a pathologist having been sidelined from where I started life as a biologist - now actively retired, I always considered biology to be my true profession and it’s what I do every day. Once a beekeeper, actively a wildlife gardener and most days a photographer. Advocate for GreenBirding. Skews left politically.

Such a pity ... I dislike podcasts and reels and mini-videos as a substitute for 'words'. With words you can skim through and get to the meat quickly and skip the filler but with video you waste time waiting for the author to get to the point.
Against tough competition, the liner notes of LPs must be the most dismal form of literature.
And so many of the authors proudly sign themselves by name, as if the turgid long paragraphs of all-too-purple prose were something to be proud of.

Some seasonal things that caught my eye, a bird with attitude that would probably also have liked to catch my eye had I not had a reasonable distance and a camera lens separating the two of us.

I want to go back to
- having paper bags for my veg in the supermarket, not plastic.
- bread wrapped in waxed paper, not plastic.
- glass jars, not plastic.
- glass bottles, not plastic.
There are so many ways we could return to how things were done in the past that worked perfectly fine and that didn't use plastic.
It would take legislation. which requires pressure from citizens.
I want to get on this. Are there any organizations pushing for abolishing plastic as much as possible?

REALLY tired of people saying, "Why are you still worried about covid? It's endemic."
"Endemic" does NOT mean "harmless & without risk".
It DOES mean "here to stay" which means the RISKS of covid are here to stay, which means we're all living with a HIGHER baseline of risk which means governments & institutions & people should be making PERMANENT changes that address that risk.
I curse the journalists & "let it rip" "experts" that made people think "endemic" = "harmless".
The common name of this fungus arises from the notion that they are large enough to take the weight of a seated Dryad. Looked at with more modern eyes they remind me of the seats of the old-fashioned tractors that you could see around farms back in the distant days of the 1950s. But then I wonder maybe some of the ancient tractor drivers were Dryads in modern dress?

Focussing on one of those vulnerable species that we won’t find on a local walk. A particularly iconic and highly vulnerable example, here in Canada, are Caribou - in Europe these are Santa’s Reindeer, and who wants to see them going into extinction or living out diminished lives in sanctuaries and zoos.

We had a visitor ... a very smart and inquisitive fellow with a nice rusty coat
@GottaLaff eep! That's a thought that's going to fester.
"But this is Britain, where extremist political violence is someone carrying a brick and throwing a chair leg. In America, there aren’t just automatic weapons and rights to openly carry firearms, there are actual militias."
A deeply depressing article from The Guardian ... nothing surprising here, but very worrying to see it all laid out so clearly.

Yes, local newspapers are essential in so many ways.
But it is getting so that life is too short to ever click onto a local news website.
Avoiding the onslaught of adverts is like playing Space Invaders. And working out where the next paragraph of a news item is like Where's Wally.
There must be a more balanced way of supporting local news sites.
The sheer un-usability of so many of the sites now means that the advertisers cannot be benefitting, and so the journalists cannot be benefitting.

It’s a wonderful thing to watch a bird fly but to know that bird we also need to know how flight is achieved. Field and laboratory biological science are complementary - this cartoon sends a skewed message.
