Reading this book for work and so far it’s really interesting.

It traces the post WWI #gender upheaval of the 1920s the following clamping back down post WWII and how this suppression fostered the window of gender revolution in fashion again in the late 60s before the closing back down in the 80s.

The book also discusses the cultural baggage and meaning that #Unisex carries vs terms like “#allgender”; the modern idea of gender vs the older “sex-role” as seen in in The Feminine Mystique (published in 1963)—and how generational assumptions and change in historical meaning between the terms of sex and gender greatly shift the understanding between social age groups of modern queerness, #fashion, presentation, and #accessibility.

Evolutionary biologists have a useful concept called "punctu-ated equilibrium," which can be applied to cultural change as well. Instead of Darwin's model of smooth, steady evolution, punctuated equilibrium means there are long periods of stasis between events of sudden change when the new ecological system settles in. These eras of little change may be a period of adjustment or a time when populations are migrating to a more hospitable environment. A biologist friend explained it this way: the internal or external events (mutations, crises) that result in significant change can be stressful. Like a rubber band that is stretched too far, a species can either snap (extinction) or retreat to something like its original size and shape, just slightly al-tered. She made this suggestion when I was struggling to explain the apparently sudden change in the U.S. cultural climate after 1972, which includes the gradual decline in enthusiasm for the Equal Rights Amendment as well as a revival of "classic" elements and styles, from Diane Von Furstenberg's dresses to the power suit and Preppymania.
Perhaps, she said, the changes of the 1960s had been "too much, too soon" for enough people that we had relaxed into a period of stasis.”
