<p>In last week’s <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2026/01/31/explainer-snapshots-2/">Explainer on snapshots</a>, I stated that “you can safely remove all Time Machine snapshots from that volume except the most recent, which is also the smallest.” This article explains the reasoning behind that.</p>
<h4>Why delete snapshots?</h4>
<p>Time Machine and other backup utilities make local snapshots on the volumes they back up in addition to copying all changes to backup storage, normally on a different device like an external disk. Because of that, local snapshots are a bonus <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2024/07/10/snapshots-arent-backups/">not a backup</a>. When a volume being backed up is running short of free space, one good method of freeing up space is therefore to delete some of those local snapshots.</p>
<p>Sometimes deleting just one snapshot can free up a lot of space, but estimating the amount likely to be returned is complicated, and to a degree not always readily predictable. If you know one of those snapshots has retained a very large file like a VM or macOS update, you may be able to get away with just deleting the single snapshot, but it’s more usual to need to delete as many as possible, typically just keeping one.</p>
<p>If you are going to retain one snapshot, then by far the smallest is likely to be the most recent, as that almost invariably contains the fewest changes from the current contents of the volume. The oldest snapshot is a

So now I have a Storage Box from #Hetzner mounted to a PBS VPS as a #CIFS mount. This thing works faster than I expected, without issues so far. Will see how it goes.

Also, 1TB for € 3.20 is quite a good price. Cheaper than #Backblaze. And I can mount that storage to #HomeAssistant as a backup target as well.

It presents 4 buttons (Edit, Backup, Restore, Play), a menu (File, Setup, Tools, Help), and various control displays (the path of the game, a duration, the date and time of the last save, ...). A large window also shows the status of the current saves (changelog).

📚️ Game Backup Monitor is a libre, multi-platform tool for managing/backing up the user's video game backup data (or for monitoring any application on the player's PC). It detects the launch of supported games, then once the game is finished, it automatically backup and compress (in 7-Zip format) the saved games. It also supports DOSBox, ScummVM and Wine. It can be used on a single computer or multiple computers to effectively add cloud support to any game or application. It can also automatically launch other software when a monitored game is detected, track the number of hours and number of sessions of a game.

But the cool thing about Jottacloud is they have a #linux cli program, that you could run on a raspi as a NAS device, and do period offsite archival backups too, so you have a complete 3-2-1 #backup solution wrapped in lefse.

Having an interesting time also with my iCloud Photos backup. Main thing I want is to preserve the folders on the PC as I’ve organised them in the iOS app. It’s doable when the photos sync to iCloud and you download a zip folder from each album.

I realised it had used my phone’s version of the app and synced just one small folder so I stopped the phone from syncing (everything is backed up in two places already, I’m just here for the many folders I made throughout last year on the iPad).

So far the fresh sync has not realised I turned the setting off on the phone. I hope it does but it’s also not urgent, I just had the drive to do it and I like to finish things when I can. It’s a funny thing, tech not playing ball and not knowing why.
