Spent some time tonight figuring out a few things to help with my home backup solution.
First, I wanted a backup solution OTHER THAN synology's Active backup. Its fine and all, but its severely limited. It does full machine backups, with no exclusions. resulting in enormous backups on my NAS, which i then replicate to the cloud. Which can get expensive.
I had tinkered with Restic to do a point-in-time backup of my desktop a while back, but I never really dug in, to see what sort of storage back-ends it supported and how to best leverage it. Tonight I did that.
Then I stood up a Minio service on my Synology, which was surprisingly easy until I learned that they gimped their web UI for free users sometime in 2025. Which makes me sad, but I found some how-to's on how their CLI works, and got things configured.
Now I have restic on this laptop backing up to Minio via Restic for the first time, and it seems like automating it for daily backups would be relatively easy.
