It’s a good week for critters in my garden. Maybe I should start submitting nature photos. Here’s a toad in my pitiful squash patch and a black swallowtail butterfly laying eggs in my celery. #Gardening #BackyardCritters #Toad #Butterfly

Garden + critter: weeds surround a crack in the dirt, about 4 inches or 10 cm wide. Inside the crack a wide gray toad mouth and two beady eyes poke into the light.Garden + butterfly: amidst a messy jungle of tomato plants, weeds, and 2 celery plants, on the right side of the frame, a large black butterfly with yellow and blue dots along the bottom edge of its wings flutters above the celery.

And a small knock on the front door was one of our many neighborhood raccoons. I did not answer. #BackyardCritters #berkeleyadventures

Last night’s visitors include a doe and her two fawns. Saw her early on in the season and then not for a long while. Glad to see the little family is doing well. #BackyardCritters #berkeleyadventures

What deer? You may ask. Oh, just this one browsing on my roses like he at a diner. Also browses the buds off mock orange, Clarkia, Gilia, poppies, and fringe cups. So far. Loves the island mallow as well. #BackyardCritters #berkeleyadventures

Met this beauty hanging out beside the front door this afternoon. She's perched above the #StapeliaGigantea succulent which just started blooming and is attracting flies.

Looking up at a large grey-greenish brown praying mantis who is standing looking directly back at me from the stuccoed wall of our house.Another view of the praying mantis from side on, showing her body shape and patterning. She's absolutely still watching me.A single stapelia gigantea bloom; a big fleshy, stinky, hairy, starfish flower hanging over the edge of a flowerpot with an unopened bloom and parts of the succulent in the background.

Two chipmunks in a car, driving like people. The chipmunk on the passenger seat has huge puffed-up cheeks, and the driver chipmunk does not. Driver chipmunk says to the puffy-cheej chipmunk, "I am NEVER taking you to another buffet."

Definitely the most colourful alligator lizard I've met in our backyard. Viss said he's "nubtastic"! 😁💚🧡

A beautiful mid-size alligator lizard with their front left foot missing so the arm ends in a stump. Brick red, dark brown and grey geometric patterning runs down their back.

"If I close my eyes, you can't see me, right?"

Good morning! Who got “nearly bumping into a buck at the base of the stairs” on this morning’s bingo?
The chickens tried to tell me. Like pointer dogs they all had their necks craned in the deer’s direction and were super tall. #BackyardCritters #berkeleyadventures

I think we might have new pet. There is baby bunny in our backyard that seems to be getting used to my wife

The song sparrows and the towhees are rearing this year’s chicks as part of my chicken flock. Oh dear. #BackyardCritters #berkeleyadventures

Usually by this time of year this milkweed has been absolutely demolished by dozens of monarch caterpillars. This year I've only seen a single butterfly and this caterpillar. There must be more I'm not seeing but so far this year the weather seems to be in favour of the plant and not the insect.

Today’s yard finds include a friendly snakefly and a slime mold that is trying to compete with the blooms. #BackyardCritters #berkeleyadventures

For reference, here is their partner with normal bobin legs. #bird #AMRO #berkeleyadventures #BackyardCritters

OMG Mastodon peeps, I have a really special Robin in my backyard (building a nest). But can someone tell me what the heck is going on with this bobin’s legs?!?! I have never seen this before. #bird #AMRO #BackyardCritters #berkeleyadventures

Here's hoping that the great conjunction of the #VernalEquinox and #WorldFrogDay means this tiny backyard friend makes eir return today. Love em.

Anyone using or considering a #Smartphone slip-over #zoom #lens? I'm researching something to capture my #BackyardCritters and wonder if they're worth the money and durable.

Ideas? Opinions?
