I recorded a quick video showing how I tapped into the power and data inside the barcode scanner to interface to the #esp32 running #esphome. I'm working on some QoL tweaks to improve the interface to #grocy to allow for more use-cases.
I also clipped the pins down a bit so the whole thing is a bit more compact.
Once the esphome code is a bit less shameful I'll post it on github.

Seven new cards were uploaded in the site. These cards comes from the comic magazine "Shougaku san-nen-sei" 「小学三年生」number 11 from year '92.
There were lots of cards included as a present in several japanese magazines.
The rare thing is to find those cards not removed in the magazine, like displayed in photos.

Durch #Appzwang bei #Semesterticket und #Deutschlandticket oder aufwändig zu verwaltenden, fehleranfälligen Funk-#Chipkarten dafür ("#DigitalOnly"), sind viele neue Probleme für Nutzer*innen des #ÖPNV entstanden.
Mit Apps von #highQ (https://www.highq.de/mobilitaetsloesungen/effizienztools/protraq) können auch ansonsten digitalen Themen aufgeschlossen gegenüberstehende #Studierende schneller als #Schwarzfahrer*innen beschuldigt werden, nachdem funktionierendes #Barcode-#Papier-#Semesterticket von der Bundespolitik verboten wurde.

thinking about the nintendo e-reader again, was curious how much data I could fit on a playing card. current trial is 2 kB of lorem ipsum as a type-40 QR code.
my phone can read this at 150 dpi (about 30 mm wide) if I use the camera app and switch to close-up mode, or 75 dpi (60 mm) in normal camera mode. A playing card is 69 mm wide, so I can just barely fit that. I guess nintendo's camera had the benefit of being designed specifically to scan teeny tiny 5mm wide strips, whereas my phone's camera is trying to focus on stuff at least a few inches away.
of course, my phone can see in grayscale, and even color, which means I'm not taking full advantage of that two inches. but I only have a black and white printer, and I couldn't find anything denser in black and white -- if you know a code that might work, let me know. But for now it looks like 2 kB in 60x60mm is the limit.
