This type of bridge was first invented by William Scherzer in the 1890s and works by using a rolling action to raise and lower the roadway. This is made easier by the positioning of a large counter weight mounted at one end above the tracks on which it rotates up and down (visible in the top middle of the photo).

The White Cart Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge at Inchinnan just to the West of Glasgow. Built in 1923 by Sir William Arrol and Co, it's one of only two rolling lift bridges left in Scotland.

The Temple Bridge carrying Bearsden Road over the Forth and Clyde Canal in the west of Glasgow. Built in 1932 by William Arrol and Co Ltd and T. Somers, it was designed as a bascule bridge, with a massive counterweight hidden the right hand sandstone support, to allow it to lift up to let boat traffic pass undernearth.

The bridge itself and the trestle leading to it from both shores are rusted and covered with graffiti, including some on the stone piers rising from the river to the trestle. The supports for the overheat catenary wires still straddle the trestles. Because the bridge span is upright, someone painted an elaborate “TLC” in white at the base of the locked span, facing the viewer. A person climbed the upright (at a 60 degree angle) span and raised a Ukrainian flag from the top of the span.

A red channel marker is visible in the river, and the water’s appearance varies due to current - it’s smoother and glassier in the center along the channel.

Yesterday I did a longer tour by #bike (55 kilometres). Among many other things, I passed the #seaport of #Emden and crossed another bascule bridge. Whenever I look at the elevated and upright street in front of me, I get so dizzy 🙃

"Nesserlander Schleuse". The lift mechanism of the bascule bridge consists of two 14.5 m high pylons with corresponding balance beams, which can lift the 120 t bridge flap during a lock. The street is raised a little from the ground.

Now the street is upright.
