Circles of Light and Stone

Some buildings stop being places of worship and become places of wonder. The Eusebius Church in Arnhem — now the Stichting Eusebius Arnhem, a museum celebrating the city’s history — is one of them.

When I stepped inside, the calm air carried a sense of timeless geometry. My eyes were immediately drawn upward to the large golden light rings suspended from the high arched ceiling. Perfectly stacked, they seemed to hover between heaven and history — a bridge between sacred architecture and modern design.

I stood directly beneath them, camera in hand — the Canon 5DsR paired with the Sigma 24–70mm Art — and aligned the frame so that every circle, every rib of the arch, fell into balance. Light as a subject. Symmetry as a teacher.

Photography, after all, is a study of how light defines form — and sometimes, in places like this, both feel eternal.

A quiet moment inside a Manhattan church. The air felt still, the light soft and heavy. One person sat alone in prayer, surrounded by silence and stillness.

Dinge die mit "G" beginnen...Gebet' //
Things that start with the letter G... well in German it was a prayer, but to stay on subject, in English it could be gods, old and new #FotoVorschlag

Also, TIL the alternative meaning of the word "habit".

A full-shot, vertical photo shows the interior of a Catholic church. In the foreground, a person in a dark grey habit is sitting on a wooden pew with their back to the camera, facing the altar. To their left, another person in a grey shirt is also sitting on a pew, looking down. In the background, the ornate, golden altar features a painting and is flanked by golden statues. Above the altar, a crucifix with the figure of Jesus Christ is mounted on the wall. Statues of angels are visible on the side walls. The photo has a dark, dramatic mood.

In the Castle Church of Wittenberg, the neo-Gothic princely pew made of oak stands between the pulpit and the chancel. Commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm II, it was donated by Protestant German princes and the free cities of Lübeck, Hamburg, and Bremen. Designed by Friedrich Adler and executed by Wilhelm Lober, the 22 seats are adorned with coats of arms and ornate canopies.

I stand before the high altar of the Wittenberg Castle Church, where light dances through colorful stained glass and the stone figures glow in its shine. The Gothic arches frame the scene, and solemn silence fills the space. In this sacred atmosphere, I feel deeply moved by history and reverence.

You know Glasgow gets a lot of rain when someone goes to the effort of fitting an umbrella holder and drip tray to the end of every pew in one of its churches! This is Carmunnock Parish Church on the city's southern edge. It was built in the 18th Century, but the interior is primarily 19th Century.

"The Interior of the Buurkerk at Utrecht," Pieter Jansz. Saenredam, 1644.

Saenredam (1595-1665) was a Dutch Golden Age painter whose specialty was church interiors, which, for some reason was a popular genre of painting at the time. It's something I never quite understood.

Saenredam is a little bold here as he exaggerates the height of the columns and windows to make the church look more grand and impressive.

A mystery exists about the boys in the lower right. One plays with a dog, the other is painting graffiti on the wall. What was he trying to signify there? Arguments exist that these were added to the painting after the artist's death; if so, who did it, and why?

From the National Gallery, London.

A Dutch Golden Age painting. We are standing inside a lofty church, with pillars reaching far overhead. Light shines through the tall windows. In the background, we see a small group of people talking; in the foreground, a boy draws graffiti on the wall.
