I'll be at 2 different workplaces tomorrow for two different local nonprofits.

LifeCycles Project team is having their jam making work party all day, out of Mustard Seed Distribution HQ kitchen. I'll be there most of tomorrow afternoon.

In the morning, I'll be helping out with another Iyé Creative Collective event 👇

Seeds and Synergies is a gathering that aims to bring together community members, growers, farmers, and farmers to be, facilitators, and partners from racialized groups to reflect on the role of Culturally Relevant Crops and Land Access in shaping the access of these groups to locally grown, healthy and nutritious foods, education, employment opportunities, income, and belonging to the land, to themselves and their communities.

For the past five years, Iyé Creative has been working with community members and local farmers to learn about cultural crops – plant relatives that carry deep meaning for our food, health, and traditions on Coast Salish lands. We’ve also been pushing for fairer land policies so more people can grow the foods and medicines that matter to them.

Cultural foods aren’t just products on a market, or grocery store shelf. They’re living connections that tie us to land, spirit, and each other.

Me & Lisa. We will be working closely together over the next few months. Lisa is our Communications Coordinator.

Her background:

Lisa has always had a deep love for getting her hands in the soil and has spent over a decade working on small-scale farms in coastal BC. She was the Programs Coordinator for the Capital Region Food and Agriculture Initiatives Roundtable (CRFAIR), where she developed and coordinated Growing Together—a collaborative initiative that created tools and resources to support people in growing food. She is deeply passionate about supporting local agriculture, increasing food literacy, and helping people grow and access good, local food. In addition to her work with LifeCycles, Lisa coordinates the Yates Street Community Garden on lək̓ʷəŋən Territory in downtown Victoria. She is committed to being in service to community and to building relationships through growing and sharing food.

The image shows two women posing in a garden setting with autumnal foliage and a wooden trellis. The woman on the left is casually dressed in a green printed t-shirt, dark pants, and a light green “Lifecycles” baseball cap. She has curly brown hair, round glasses, and holds a professional DSLR camera. A black camera strap is across her shoulder. The woman on the right wears a denim jumpsuit, cinched with a red belt, her hair has streaks of green and blue, and she holds a walking stick decorated with stickers. Both women are smiling broadly at the camera. In the background, there are other people, lush greenery, and a building with a red painted section. A stone path is visible.

The Unsung Hero: Celebrating the Forgotten Changemakers

is the unsung hero, the one people call on when things are difficult, but whose contributions are often overlooked or exploited. She stands for the helpers and changemakers who never asked for recognition, just results. While they may not get the praise they deserve now, their impact on the community will be felt in the long run.

Sevval, with the Minnie Mouse ears, is one of the women that I work with at Burnside Gorge Community Association. She is pictured with daughter of another employee at BGCA.

I had an excellent morning meeting at Burnside Gorge Community Assn. I got a small tour of their community event spaces inside the building. I'll be covering their Halloween event on October 24th. We will also be discussing accessibility in near future as well. I'll also be documenting their popular community Christmas hampers for local families program & their annual family friendly, free community Christmas event.

I'm a longtime supporter of HCP. I've introduced many different people, locals & tourists, to their wonderful nonprofit gardens over the past 20+ years. It's one of my fave local places to take my Mom. More info below.

"The Gardens at #HorticultureCentreOfThePacific (HCP), home to the Pacific Horticulture College, presents a year-round garden experience nestled in over a hundred hectares of conservation lands.

We started growing in 1979 and are proud to be a "gardeners' garden" that connects people with plants.

Located just twelve kilometers north of Downtown Victoria, British Columbia, The Gardens at HCP are a public garden lovingly cared for by volunteers, staff, and students. Ranging from the Children's Garden to the Ethnobotany Trail to the largest outdoor Bonsai Garden in Canada (and only in Western Canada), The Gardens are a botanical and historical place that invites everyone of all interests.

Being a #nonprofit, we continue growing through the people's kindness and generosity. We are grateful to the many hands invested in The Gardens who have devoted their time, effort, and resources"

This also involves connecting and coordinating with other orgs and people and resources, so all you trunkistas with #communityBuilders skills (even informal within your #disabled circles n whatnot) would be super valuable.

We need to build this from scratch, hopefully catching some momentum with gov't policy changes around #housing and #healthcare in #Canada but mostly community-driven, by very tired people so your couple of spoons of participation can add up if we work together.
