Deadline pressure in space: a 2028 lunar landing, $50 billion in new space investment & a shift in space safety policy. Is this ambition—or a stress test on and industry?

Sydämen sykkeet tarkistettiin kohdalleen, synkronissa universumin kanssa. Mikko Paakkola, Piirrä meille maailmankaikkeus, 2002. TYKS T-sairaala.

Isokokoinen maalaus sairaalan aulatiloissa. Melkein abstrakti mutta kuitenkin maisema, vapaasti maalattu, yläosa turkoosininen alempi puolisko tummaa maanväriä ja turkoosin heijastukset. Öinen kosminen tunnelma.

This isn’t a flower. 🌹

It’s the Rosette Nebula — a vast stellar nursery nearly 130 light-years wide, sculpted by intense radiation from young stars.

The deep reds come from glowing hydrogen gas, energized by ultraviolet light, while dark dust lanes trace regions where future stars may still form. The light captured here began its journey around 5,000 years ago, long before it reached this frame.

A moment of cosmic creation and erosion—where science, time, and art intersect.

Jedi Knight Dark Forces II – cinematic action and creepy aliens

What I'm writing about actually happened to me. It was like a dream. Like a horror movie. Like an action movie. Like Star Wars. I was on a space station. And the atmosphere there, I tell you, was pretty bad.

Yesterday, our colleague @AnnaJacyszyn presented her poster on "A Bridge over Deep Space: Astronomy and AI" at the DiTraRe symposium 2025 at ZKM Karlsruhe. In. her poster she is reporting on her experiences gained as a coordinator of the Leibniz Science Campus DiTraRe in the context of interdisciplinary studies.

In this short poster paper, Ania Jacyszyn summarises experiences gained as a coordinator of the Leibniz Science Campus DiTraRe in the context of interdisciplinary studies with a special focus on collaborating with computer scientists upon application of AI methods. I also present a literature review on the current AI applications use cases in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The goal of this article is manifold: to computer scientists, it presents the current topics in astronomy where AI is being applied, while to astronomers, it gives a review of the state-of-the-art AI techniques. The paper also aims at encouraging closer and more intense interdisciplinary collaborations.

Sea Lake Astro Fest: A Deep-Space Side Quest

Sea Lake Astro Fest 2025 turned into one of those deep-space side quests that takes over your whole weekend in the best way possible.

I was lucky enough to help out again this year, MC’ing the talks, running the science Q&A panel, hosting the pub quiz, and volunteering at the Lake Tyrrell public viewing night.

But the real highlight wasn’t the microphone or the schedule, it was watching people experience the night sky together. The curiosity, the first-time telescope reactions, the quiet “wow” moments… that’s what this festival is all about.

Somewhere in between all that, I squeezed in a final astrophotography session with Krista before she headed back to America, one last night of star chasing together after years of shared sky adventures.

Sea Lake Astro Fest isn’t about any one person. It’s about sharing the universe with anyone who shows up with a sense of wonder.

And this year delivered that and more.

The Pleiades
==========

A year after my first wide-field capture of the Pleiades, I revisited M45 with a tighter composition to reveal more of its hidden structure.

This close-up view brings out the delicate blue wisps of the reflection nebula—filaments, arcs, and soft dust clouds shaped by the hot young stars of the cluster.

With deeper integration and refined processing, this new image highlights just how intricate and dynamic the Pleiades truly are.

The risks with #SpaceRadiation ☢️ are assigned the highest priority among all risks associated with #SpaceTravel. Active shielding 🛡️ methods, which use #electromagnetic fields to deflect charged particles, can make #DeepSpace 🌌 travel safer and more feasible. Placing the passive shielding before the active shielding is more effective than placing the identical active shielding before the passive shielding of the same thickness sciencedirect.com/science/arti
