"I feel it is unacceptable that we do not even fully understand our #SolarSystem, while 100 billion #planetary systems are in our Milky Way 🌌 galaxy alone, and 100 billion such #galaxies in the #universe. The red color of Mars is mere inches deep Mars is the red planet: its surface and atmosphere are both red, as we've directly observed. But that redness is only skin-deep: mere millimeters in places. Here's why. bigthink.com/starts-with-... #space #planetary #mars #astronomy

The result is that despite having extraordinarily high to the point of blowing past boundaries, we nonetheless fail to ensure that everyone has access to basic goods & services. Human deprivation is widespread. This represents a massive misallocation of resources.

One of the cool things about sustained scientific programs is time series, where we can see how things wax and wane over time. We've been collecting data on #Mars long enough to do that for one of its most interesting climatic features - #planetary #dust #storms.

Daytime zonal mean column dust optical depth (CDOD at 9.3 μm) during the dusty perihelion season for MY 24 to MY 36. MY 24–26 and MY 28–36 are obtained from TES observations and from the integration of MCS profiles, respectively and normalized to 610 Pa. Contours are used to better define the regional dust storms. (The 0.2 contour has been used to define the change in the amount of dust in the atmosphere due to the storm and the 0.3 contour to describe the extent.)

"Jupiter Core" by XKCD comic (mirror bots @xkcd @xkcdbot ) - He starts with actual theories and then, as usual, gets distracted and his attention wanders off... Some shiny stuff.🪙🏴‍☠️ So far no squirrels.🐿️🐕 xkcd.com/3083/ #astronomy #planetary #space #WTF #humor

XKCD comic #3083 "Jupiter Core"

Transcript & explanation by ExplainXKCD https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/3083:_Jupiter_Core

Transcript:
Current leading theories for what's in the center of Jupiter:

[Variations of Jupiter, except for the last are shown with about 1/8 of the planet chopped off to show the core.]

[Jupiter with liquid material at its core]
Diffuse mix of heavy elements and metallic hydrogen

[Jupiter with a rocky core]
Rocky core with metallic, hydrogen mantle

[Jupiter with a pile of coins for a core, with multiple dollar signs shown]
Valuable treasure

[Jupiter with Earth for a core]
Emergency backup Earth

[Hollow Jupiter with a rocky planet in the middle]
Regular planet pretending to be a gas giant to avoid attention

[Jupiter with a smooth ball for a core]
Hard ball from avocado

[Jupiter with a small version of Jupiter for a core]
Baby Jupiter, still gestating

[Jupiter as a flat circle, with nothing chopped off]
No core; flat Earth conspiracists are wrong about Earth but right about Jupiter

title text: Juno mission data suggests that Jupiter actually contains Matryoshka doll-style nested copies of every other planet in the Solar System.

explanation (truncated to fit alt text):
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System, the fifth planet from the Sun, and the closest-in gas giant. The core of the planet is hidden by an enormous gaseous atmosphere, and this comic lists a number of theories about the structure of that core. [...]

As far as I could find, we don't really have anything like the Star Trek alphabetized #planetary classification, at least not for rocky #planets. But we do have something for gas giants in the form of the Sudarsky classification based on spectra and temperature.

“This is an extinction-level event for #NASA science,” said Casey Dreier, chief of #space policy for the #Planetary Society, a space advocacy group. “It needlessly terminates functional, productive #science missions & cancels new missions currently being built, wasting billions of taxpayer dollars in the process. This is neither efficient nor smart budgeting.”

#Trump’s #budget proposal, though not yet formally submitted to Congress, would eviscerate a long list of #planetary & #astronomical missions, including the next major #NASA #space #telescope & the agency’s goal of bringing samples of #Mars back to Earth to search for signs of ancient life.

NASA’s #astrophysics budget would take a huge hit, dropping from ~$1.5B to $487M. Planetary #science would see a drop from $2.7B to $1.9B. #EarthScience would drop from ~$2.2B to $1.033B.

The #Planetary #Boundaries framework indicates that humanity has transgressed multiple critical Earth system processes, placing us outside of a safe operating space.

Recent studies show that a majority of the nine planetary boundaries, including those related to climate change and biodiversity loss, are now exceeded, increasing the risk of irreversible environmental changes.

"Moonquakes Surprisingly Common" is #NASA #astronomy picture of the day (#APOD) - Seismometers left by Apollo crews continued to transmit #quake data for years. Data from max sensor network installation in 1972 until 1977 shows moonquakes are more common than earthquakes. One theory about why says that could be caused by tidal influence from Earth's gravity. Future lunar stations and settlements will need to plan for quakes. apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap250406.ht #planetary #geology

Why are there so many moonquakes? Analyses of seismometers left on the moon during the Apollo moon landings reveal a surprising number of moonquakes occurring within 100 kilometers of the surface. In fact, 62 moonquakes were detected in data recorded between 1972 and 1977. Many of these moonquakes are not only strong enough to move furniture in a lunar apartment, but the stiff rock of the moon continues to vibrate for many minutes, significantly longer than the softer rock earthquakes on Earth. The cause of the moonquakes remains unknown, but a leading hypothesis include tidal gravity from -- and relative heating by -- our Earth. Regardless of the source, future moon dwellings need to be built to withstand the frequent shakings. Pictured here, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin stands beside a recently deployed lunar seismometer, looking back toward the lunar landing module.

Earth has lost enough soil moisture in the last 40 years to change the planet’s spin and shift the location of the North Pole, according to a new study published today in Science that tracks how human activities have disrupted the global water cycle.

Researchers comparing satellite measurements of the planet’s water with the wobble in its rotation identified a steady loss of global soil moisture.
