Digesting Food Studies—Episode 113: Eating and Social Isolation
rss.com/podcasts/digesting-foo

Do you eat alone, or with others? Is it by choice, or are your commensality options dictated by your social condition, your domestic situation, your access to shared space? doi.org/10.15353/cfs-rcea.v4i2

Eating is both a unifier and divider in our food cultures, and the spaces in which we do it can both support connection-making and reinforce isolation. This episode focuses on an audio artwork by Mélanie Binette—a sound installation in a Montréal community restaurant called “Invité.e.s Invisible.s”—intended to help solo eaters connect.

Plus, Alexia Moyer shares two other soundscapes and their implications for sociability, while Samphe Ballamingie responds poetically to Mélanie’s artistic intervention.

Favorite international cuisines: 2026 Update

Source: instagram.com

Updating a post from 2011, these are the favorite international (not American or Canadian) cuisines that have been enjoyed the most to date. Newly tried cuisines in the 15 year interim are Portuguese, Irish, Korean, Brazilian, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, and Kenyan. While it’s preferable to first eat these global cuisines in their home nation, that is not always possible nor practical. Cuisines shown in bold italics have been eaten on home turf (though not necessarily first).

Greek/Mediterranean – Souvlaki is a favorite, but also love gyros, salads, feta cheese, and olives – how do you say yummy in Greek?

Thai – How many people can say the first time they had Thai cuisine was in a pub in Inverness, Scotland?

Mexican – enchiladas, tacos, burritos, sopapillas, and so much more

Persian/Middle Eastern – ahhh, kabobs and saffron rice

Italian – so many delicious choices

Chinese

Portuguese

Irish

English/Scottish – yes you read that correctly – haggis anyone? Love lamb, fish and chips, as well as the multitude of offerings at an English/Scottish breakfast.

Korean

Indian

Japanese – not a fan of uncooked fish, but like many other offerings

French

Brazilian – tapas anyone?

Vietnamese

German

Kenyan

Ethiopian

As can be seen, there are many other cuisines that still need to be enjoyed. I am always looking forward to each new tasty experience for the palate. Peace!

The image depicts a historical scene with two children standing on a sidewalk, eating what appears to be ice cream cones. They are dressed in early 20th-century clothing: one child is wearing striped overalls and the other has on a white dress with dark sleeves.

Behind them stands an adult woman holding onto her hat while observing the children. To their right, there's another individual standing next to what seems like a wooden structure or box containing some sort of waste or discarded items. The setting appears urban as it is characterized by cobblestone pavement and large doors leading into buildings in the background.

The black-and-white photograph has a vintage quality with visible graininess typical of older film photography, suggesting that this image might have been captured between 1896 and 1906 during Arnold Genthe's time in Chinatown, San Francisco. The number "287" is printed on the negative or print at the bottom left corner.

Further context about this photograph can be found by researching its historical background, including information related to photographer Arnold Genthe (1869-1942), who was known for his work documenting various aspects of San Francisco and Chinatown during that era.

Had lunch with the wife at Kebab Planet in Al Mouj.

It is one of those places which doesn't think they need anything as crass as an actual menu and instead inflict a single long webpage on the poor customer who is expected to use their phone. After 10 minutes we managed to get a staff member to find the store tablet!

The wife had a kebab of some sort which she pronounced would keep her alive if she was starving.

Did a little Christmas baking. Cinnamon rolls. Didn't really get the dough warm enough for a proper rise, but still pretty tasty!

Amandines de Provence. Biscuits H. Lalo [ca. 1900]

loc.gov/pictures/item/20046657

This image depicts an advertisement poster for "Amandines de Provence," a brand of almond biscuits. The artwork features a stylized female figure, presumably representing the product's target demographic, sitting at a table with her eyes closed and smiling contentedly as she enjoys the biscuits. She wears a vibrant yellow dress and has reddish-brown hair styled in an elaborate updo adorned with flowers.
The background is split into two distinct colors: deep blue on top and white at the bottom. The text "Amandines de Provence" appears prominently across the upper portion of the poster, while additional information such as "Biscuits H. Lalo," "Dessert Exquis," and a mention of an award from Paris 1900 is displayed in smaller fonts.
The overall design reflects Art Nouveau influences with its flowing lines, organic forms, and emphasis on decorative elements. This poster would have been used to attract potential customers by associating the product with indulgence, elegance, and quality through both visual appeal and textual persuasion.

I spent a lot of extra time at the table, not allowed to leave until I had finished. It was awful because I had sensory issues and smells really bothered me. They guilted me by saying there were starving children on this planet and I should be grateful to have food. I remember feeling awful for those kids without food and still not wanting to eat, eventually holding my nose and gagging down the food plated for me. Boo. Hiss. #actuallyautistic #food #eating #blog #memories

When you were young, did your parents force you to stay at the table until you had finished your plate of food? And did they guilt you into eating?
