Tanghulu Strawberries (and Grapes.)

At our local fair over Canadian Thanksgiving, we enjoyed some Tanghulu Strawberries. They were great! It was fascinating watching the vendor prepare and lay out the treats.

In retrospect, I should have gone for a smaller aperture to get more of the strawberries in focus. Live in and learn.

Some of the fair food that the wife and I had yesterday at the Carolina Classic Fair here in Winston Salem, NC.

This is a deep fried lemon pepper turkey wing with lemon pepper fries.

This was really good. The skin was crunchy and crispy and seasoned excellently. The fries were AMAZING and I don't often say that about fries.

How are we all doing today and now that it's the weekend, what are the plans?

The wife and I are heading to the Carolina Classic Fair here in Winston Salem, NC today as yesterday was the first day and I had two job interviews so we couldn't make it.

Going to be lots of new food for us to try this year that we are super excited about!

Afterwards, it'll be just resting this evening and recovering from the fair.

At the Indiana State Fair, the stalls selling beef, pork and chicken are very popular. However, we're not big meat eaters, so we usually eat at the Dairy Barn. Every year they have a sandwich that is a special take on grilled cheese. This year it was a Hot Honey Pepperoni Pull Grilled Cheese: mozzarella, pepperoni and hot honey on sweet Hawaiian bread, served with marinara sauce. The special milkshake was a blueberry shake. The sandwich was good, but the shake was great.I don't usually eat deep fried food, but every year I buy deep fried Oreos at the Fair. Here are 2 Oreos that were dipped in red velvet batter and deep fried and 2 dipped in regular batter, then sprinkled with confectioner's sugar and served with a cream cheese sauce.They used to have poultry shows at the Fair, but bird flu stopped that. Now they have a few exhibits: here is an adult broiling chicken (i.e., a chicken that is raised for for meat). They are typically white, like this one and they are typically slaughtered at about 7 weeks of age, when they are full grown. Learning that made me sad. 7 weeks is not a very long time to live.Every year, artists create a huge cheese sculpture that captures the theme of the fair.: this year's theme is “The Art & Nature of Fun.” Nancy Baker and Sarah Kaufmann used almost 2,000 pounds of yellow and white cheese from Pace Dairy in Crawfordsville to create this year's sculpture. The right side is a take on “American Gothic” and the left side is reminiscent of “Mona Lisa.” The Indiana Dairy mascot Buttercup is also in there. The sculpture was unveiled today.
