(Scroll down for explanation in English)
Bisher habe ich mal das generische Maskulinum verwendet und mal gegendert. Irgendwie hat das für mich keine wirkliche Rolle gespielt.
Mittlerweile haben mich Söder und Aiwanger allerdings soweit, dass ich überlege, ab sofort nur noch und bei jeder sich bietenden Gelegenheit zu gendern.
Natürlich irgendwie kindisch. Aber die anderen haben angefangen 🤪

There is a controversial debate going on here in Germany, regarding the use of custom grammar to include women (or female versions of nouns).
Example:
"der Schüler" means "the male student"
"die Schülerin" means "the female student"
"die Schüler" means "the male students"
"die Schülerinnen" means "the female students"
So far, it was usual to say "die Schüler" when referring to a group consisting of male and (!) female students, although it was the male plural version and therefore denied the fact that there are also girls/women in this group.
Now "gendern" or "geschlechtergerechte Sprache" is a rather new trend which tries to eliminate that denial by referring to a group consisting of male and (!) female students by using the following:
"die Schüler*innen"
(pronounced with a short break represented by the asterisk)
This way, you can respect and clearify that there are male students and female students in the group.
If you should use the version including females or stick to the male only version is very controversial here in Germany, with conservative politicians more or less hating the female-including version.
Bavaria's prime minister Markus Söder (who is more or less a bad parody of Donald Trump) and vice prime minister Hubert Aiwanger (who is more or less a bad parody of Markus Söder) hate using the female-including version and want to prohibit it by law (at least in government agencies). No joke.
So far, I didn't care which version I should use. So I used both, sometimes the one and sometimes the other.
But since Söder and Aiwanger have been my favourite enemies for years and they now want a law that prohibits speaking in a certain way, I'm thinking about using the female-including version only and as often as possible.
This would be kind of childish, of course. But as German children like to say when they are criticized for participating in a fight: "the others have started it!" 🤪
And yes, this is really the kind of "problems" conservative politicians in Germany see.
