🎉 In 2025, we're still desperately trying to make storing files seem effortless with yet another "simple" solution that's anything but. promises to save us from the hell that is AWS pricing, but don't worry—it's only in invite-only beta mode, so you'll just have to take their word for it! 🙄💸

Why is file storage and CDN delivery still so fucking hard even in 2025?

Microsoft is giving OneDrive a big refresh, which includes easier file filtering, file sharing, and even file creating. And the best part is, the changes will be available to everyone by the end of the month

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Google, Apple and Microsoft have cloud storage solutions. So does Evernote, Kdrive and other products. The issue with all of these solutions is that they are owned by corporations. They are simple and convenient to use but at the cost of being locked in to an OS in some cases, and to corporate interests.

NextCloud is an open source alternative with hosting solutions that offer people with the choice of choosing between hosting solutions that are as local, or as remote as they want. I could choose between a German and a Dutch hosting solution. I chose [tab.cloud](https://tab.digital/) simply because they offer 8gb rather than 2gb like another solution. You can upgrade to 128 gigabytes, or to a maximum of over 500 gigabytes in the paying tiers.

You can install Nextcloud locally too. I installed it on a raspberry pi but I haven’t configured it to make it usable yet but I also installed it on a windows machine via Docker. That was quick and easy to do. I was thinking of playing with NextCloud on Linode but will do some local experimentation first. It seems intuitive and simple to use after several minutes of experimentation. That’s how quick and easy it is to get up and running.

The price for Google One is 100 CHF per year for two terabytes, and 120 CHF per year for iCloud with the same amount of storage. The price for theGoodCloud is 240 for one terabyte of data shared with five people. With Linode/Akamai the estimated cost could be 206.88 Dollars per year. The cheapest solution is Kdrive at about 60 CHF per year for two terabytes.

And Finally

Buying two terabytes of storage to keep at home costs from 63 CHF upwards. You could easily setup NextCloud on a Raspberry Pi and plug an external drive to that computer and keep it on 24/7. When you get home you could back up all the photos from that day. You would save on storage costs. One of my biggest frustrations with online storage solutions is that if you want to retrieve your data you need to spend several days downloading the data.

With a solution like NextCloud and the mobile phone app you could setup a local machine to backup all your photos. You would have the tertiary backup online but keep the pictures on your phone, the primary backup in your own home and the tertiary backup online.

I will setup a NextCloud system locally.

Any computerphiles know why this might be happening? I have a source texture that I am resizing with Windows Photos as a lazy way to make the texture smaller.

Source image is 512x512. 8.00KB on disk. Actual size is 6.48KB.

It is rescaled to 128x128. 4.00KB on disk. Actual size is 0.86KB.

It is rescaled again to 64x64. Back up to 8.00KB on disk. Actual size is 0.5KB.

I thought it might have something to do with 512 goto 128 goto 64, but when converting from 512 directly to 64, I get the same thing. (The new file is actually 2B smaller too.)

A series of windows showing the image details of the same .png data that has scaled from the original 512x512 image, to a smaller 128x128 image, and to an even smaller 64x64 image.

The 512 image is taking up 8KB of disk space, the 128 image is taking up 4KB of disk space, and the 64 image is taking up 8KB of disk space.A picture showing 4 windows that display file details with arrows showing how the files were made.

The 512 image was turned into a 128 image, and then the 128 image was turned into a 64 image.

Additionally, the 512 image was turned directly into a 64 image. This image takes up the same 8KB on disk, but the file's actual size is 2B smaller than the other 64 image that went through the double resize.

What do you call the device you plug into your USB port to store data onto? (Not talking about an external hard drive or SSD)

If you use multiple, pick the one that you yourself prefer.

If you prefer multiple ones, pick the one that you have used the earliest. (grew up with)

Webnative File System is a versioned content-addressable distributed file system with private and public sub-systems. It offers concurrent writes and offline access.

The protocol is open source, and we have worked with the community to build a Rust implementation.

Special thanks to the Banyan team, who worked on large files, and the Functionland team, who worked on mobile. Functionland also made a React native version! #distributedsystems #filestorage

Hey guys, today's #Blog post is gonna be a little bit special. Lately I've been working on PENEfiles, a digital file cabinet solution, where you can store your files online and manage them using a tagging system. You can also create notes using markdown and cross-reference everything within the system. It's like ownCloud or Seafile, but faster. Please check out the full pitch if you are interested!

@imke

Yes, it has sense, :-) #CiviCRM is a #CRM. So you can use to manage #memberships, #mailings, #forms, #pledges, #events to attend (free o with payment options).

@nextcloud has another bunch of features, hasn't it? #FileStorage, shared #calendars, shared documents, etc.

To resume: CiviCRM is a tool for an #organization, to manage its #contacts/members, launch #funCampaigns... And #Nextcloud gives services to the #members, usually to work together, #intranet, etc.

Both are great!

Backblaze Spring Release Brings Additional Security and Performance

Backblaze has announced the Spring Release for its B2 Cloud Storage platform with additional security measures and performance upgrades.

Backblaze says that its B2 Cloud storage offers enterprise-grade services to companies that want to securely store and serve their data. Currently, Backblaze has over an exabyte of data under its management which translates to over 500 billion files stored by the company's customers.

The company advertises its services as more affordable cloud storage compared to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

With the latest B2 Cloud Storage platform release, Backblaze CEO and Co-Founder Gleb Budman aim to "make storing and using data astonishingly easy."

The company has released what it calls S3 Compatible Object Lock, which means that anyone using the standard S3 protocol can activate immediate protection against human errors and ransomware. The latter is reported by Backblaze as having seen a large increase over the past year.

It’s been an unfortunately busy year when it comes to #Ransomware attacks. Incidents have increased 485% year over year in 2021 and payments are up 3,000% on average from Q3 2018. We dive into the numbers:

-- Backblaze (@backblaze) May 18, 2021

Backblaze also introduced Object Lock Legal Hold, which sets indefinite file holds for compliance, Server Side Encryption for optional added protection, and Cross-Origin Resource Sharing which enables content in B2 Cloud Storage to be easily and securely served from other websites.

Performance upgrades saw Backlaze increase its storage capacity by 65-percent since January 2020, expand API services, and carry out network enhancements.

To serve Bacblaze's growing developer customer base, the company's qualification as a Hashicorp Terraform partner further empowers developers to provision and manage B2 Cloud storage directly from Terraform configuration files "making life simpler for developers as they manage their storage solution via Infrastructure as Code."

Alongside the announcement of the new qualification, Backblaze has also recently gained new partners that provide services that seamlessly integrate with Backblaze B2: Signiants for fast file transfers, TapeArk for the tape to cloud data migration, Fastly for edge cloud and CDN integration with zero-egress fees, Facebook as part of the Data Transfer Project, and others.

Backblaze has also reported that later this year, the B2 Cloud Storage platform will add a Partner API, which gives software partners the ability to provision and manage the B2's scalable storage natively thus creating a more streamlined user experience.

Nilay Patel, VP of Sales and Partnerships ad Backblaze, explains that the company is looking forward to this development because it will make it easier for its partners and their customers to get started with Backblaze B2.

The full details of Backblaze's Spring Release can be found here.
