#Groupthink

How do you want your life to be? Round, smooth and predictable? Or dented, unique and moving in unexpected directions? This piece by Christopher Sherrod made think about how I see my life.

I embrace #individuality and #serendipity, and reject #groupthink and trends. By acknowledging myself, warts and all, I know that I can always find #meaning and #fullfilment in my life.

The Perils of Social Media for Gamedevs
Christina Pollock of the blog Load-bearing Tomato has an insightful essay about how opinions shared on social media can come to shape, and often ruin, the work of unseasoned (and even well-seasoned) developers, letting the guiding design principles of their work get blown to the winds because of internet randos

"Party spirit makes clear-seeing eyes blind, and makes sharp-hearing ears deaf, and instigates people to engage in things which no mind is inclined to adopt."

—Al-Biruni, Chronology of Ancient Nations, chapter 5.

Al-Biruni is specifically railing against Muslims who base their fasting and religious observance on calculations instead of looking at the Moon as Muhammad ordered, but it's still a worthwhile warning against groupthink.

New in the Library: The Frankenstein Effect.

We analyze how tools intended for liberation are weaponized for domination. When we teach techniques (how to deconstruct) without ethics (why), we create "operators" rather than "thinkers."

This is a study on the neurochemistry of conflict and how dopamine rewards "social signaling" over truth.

A detailed satirical cartoon titled "WOKE PARADISE." At the top left, standing on a mountain peak, is a smiling academic in a graduation gown and mortarboard holding a large camera. He holds up a developed Polaroid photo labeled "CONSTRUCTED REALITY," which depicts a unified, smiling group of people.

In contrast, the actual world below him is a chaotic, surreal landscape. Pink pigs wearing graduation caps fly through the sky. The town is a mix of warped skyscrapers and crooked traditional houses. The streets are filled with strange scenes: a purple three-eyed monster sitting on a stack of books, people holding signs that read "SAFE SPACE NOW" and "TRIGGER WARNING," and confused historical figures wandering among sheep and giant lotus flowers. The image contrasts the professor's curated, artificial narrative with the absurd reality beneath.

How to Measure Success:
Count decisions per meeting hour. Aim for at least one clear outcome.
Ask clients if they felt heard and if the process was fair. Their feedback matters, even if their first choice didn’t win.

Konsens ist kein Beweis. Oft ist er nur ein Symptom.
Groupthink erklärt, warum Gruppen sich einig fühlen – und trotzdem irren.

Business leaders: Don’t worry about corporate downsizing, everyone should Learn To Code to find great jobs!

Also business leaders: Why do we need overpaid software developers when we can just use AI to write all the software we need!

Me: Why do we need overpaid MBAs when we can just use AI to regurgitate articles from Harvard Business Review, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, etc.?

Anti-groupthink is the groupthink of the anti-groupthink group.

@Longwing But there's also #groupthink and polarisation and folk who see debating as somehow being an attack on them. But it is nice enough. :)

If there's one constant with me, it's that a trend, craze, fad, in thing, hot new thing, latest thing, best-selling thing, mania, fashion, or chic is a clear sign to back away, smirking, and stick to what *I* find worthy of my attention, because bandwagons lead us to stupidity and worse, not to enlightenment.

Crowd psychology meets behavioral economics, and the result isn’t Jekyll becoming Hyde—it’s Hyde on a megaphone.

Le Bon argued that rational individuals lose their reason in a crowd. But modern behavioral science shows the “rational individual” never existed in the first place.

‘The more uniform teams are, the more reluctant members are to disrupt perceived cohesion, which may prevent them from offering information that is considered unusual but could be highly relevant.

‘They are more likely to believe in false consensus, to fall into #groupThink, for fear of damaging the solidarity of the group, and to cling to outdated models. They also tend to be emotionally biased towards members of the ingroup, to the point of justifying their violations of norms.’

"Many people in IT […] are bearers of ‘bad news’, they try to convince people of different paradigms, which are not yet welcome as the expectations are still based on poor ideas about what is assumed to work. Making their life worse is a constant stream of bad Enterprise/IT Architects–Strategists that—generally as consultants—bring welcome (but faulty) good news to the top."

Decision vs. Outcome
- looks like we made a poor decision.
- no. We made a good decision. The outcome was poor. There were many unknowns and we decided based on what we knew. Never judge a decision by its outcome.

🤐 3. Groupthink
When unity matters more than honesty, the group adopts a safe narrative.
Voices that challenge the story? Silenced.
Justice? Too disruptive.
Truth? Replaced by consensus.

This will probably be my first and last post about an animated family film, but I've never heard the term "bean mouth" until Elio.

This is a manufactured issue. People saw this criticism and thought they had to fall in line. It's yet another example of people being toxic and negative because they're trying to emulate something they're seeing online.

Don't let the internet program you. It's fucking stupid.
