Common Criticism 1. We don’t even have air conditioning in classrooms, and you’re worried about HEPAs?!

Answer: Has it occurred to anyone that kids need BOTH and not neither?

Common Criticism 2: HEPAs won’t do anything. Just make the kids wash their hands.

Answer: Airborne viruses aren’t stopped by hand washing. You are approximately 10,000 xs more likely to get C19 through the air than from touching an object.

Common Criticism 3: Are you going to pay for them?! (They’re too expensive.)

Answer: First of all, the school boards *should* be purchasing & maintaining HEPAs. With all of the hand waving about absences, you’d think investing in staff & student health would be a no brainer…

Second: Is anyone considering how expensive it is to have a sick child and/or to be sick themselves? Even with socialized medicine in Canada, it costs 💰 to take time off. It costs 💰to fill scripts. And there are many secondary costs that aren’t even figured into this equation…

The cost of running an appropriate HEPA that can greatly reduce the likelihood of illness & associated costs is nothing compared to the cost of perpetual illness. Imagine if this was divided between 30 students. Even 300 per year is $10 a student or just over $1 per school month.

Common Criticism 3: It’s good for the kids’ immune system to get sick!

Answer: No, it is not, but that outdated information is sticky as fly paper. It needs to be addressed. The moms feel abandoned by institutional leaders & are turning to each other - a dangerous echo chamber.

Common Criticism 4: If the schools were ever going to get HEPAs, they would have done it during COVID. There’s no point trying now.

Answer: ‘During COVID’ is now & we will need airborne mitigations now and for the foreseeable future. Remember, policy moves slower than science...

Just because it hasn’t changed YET doesn’t mean it won’t. But it will take pressure from citizens, parents, advocacy groups, and any other concerned individuals to get bureaucrats moving. That’s just the reality of the situation.

We are now at the #mountain house. We have brought our 5 #cats but not our #hepa filter air purifiers. On the first days my daughter had the eyes a little irritated, so we tought the cat fur may be the cause. Having one of our air purifier shipped was pricey, but we could buy a replacement #hepa filter for less, so I built this contraption using a pc fan and american tape. It processes less air than the real #airpurifier (due to tht pc fan's lower static pressure), but it works and my daughter is now ok!

Anyone know of a good true HEPA air purifier you can get in the UK?

I facilitated an online workshop for @freetechproject tonight and it's the first time we tackled technology to fight #Covid (Co2 monitors, air purifiers, #HEPA, #CorsiRosenthal boxes, #NukitTempest, etc) as well as why this is important (what Covid is, how it spreads, etc) and the small (predominantly older) group was very open to the ideas, sincerely inquisitive about the topic, interested in reducing risk, aware of inclusion issues, and sensitive to my own experiences as carer for a partner disabled by Covid. I'm also realising that people genuinely refer to "Covid" in the past tense sometimes because they wrongly associate it with government policy, while at the same time they very clearly understand that #CovidIsNotOver. My point is, keep tackling the topic, and keep giving folks the benefit of the doubt -- humans are of course good at heart and state policies, and obviously the establishment media, may very well indeed not, in fact, reflect people's actual concerns about Covid.

Indoor air quality and ventilation folks… I need some help!

I’ve been dealing with terrible VOCs in my apartment that are making me sick. I’ve been trouble shooting for months but can’t figure out where they’re coming from.

My building has four MAUs (make up air units) on the roof that are supposed to pressurize the hallways and supply fresh air from the roof. They needed replacing, and when they were turned off the vocs in my unit dropped considerably.

Best as I can tell the pressurization must be causing excessive air leakage from someone else’s unit into mine.

I have to constantly keep a window open in order to run any exhaust fans, and they’re still high.

Here’s my latest dilemma. I’m in a tiny condo with just a living room and bedroom. Living room has a sliding door to a balcony and bedroom has a window.

I want to put a portable air conditioner in the bedroom as it runs ridiculously hot, but that will mean sealing off the window.

The portable unit comes with a hose to vent the unit out the window … so does that mean it will constantly ventilate as long as the unit is “on”?

If that’s the case it might actually help the VOCs, but I’m unsure if I’m understanding correctly.

I assume if the unit is “off” it would provide less fresh air than an open window, but appreciate any advice!

wieder Fieber bekommen über Nacht, wieder entsetzlicher Husten. Ich war erst letzte Woche 2 Tage zuhause deswegen, jetzt wieder. Das wird mich den Job irgendwann kosten. Kann dieser vermaledeite Körper nicht wenigstens funktionieren? Schlimm genug dass es die Psyche nicht tut aber nun auch noch das?

Ich rufe also an. Sagt die am Telefon: da müssen sie warten bis ihr Arzt wieder offen hat.... Ernsthaft!?

Ich hatte Fieber mit Nackensteife und weitere Symptome für ne Meningitis (wurde letztendlich ausgeschlossen) ....
