Planning a long #walk (280 miles) this #summer. Making an essential kit list. First thing on it is #saucisson! That says a lot about me! What would other #LongDistance #Walkers recommend as the first things to be packed? #River #Walks. #Slow #Research #EnvHist #HistGeog

And finally, 'on/upon-river' name distribution before 1200AD. Now we really do have something to talk about! No #Rivers #Trent, or #Thames, or #Severn! As always, your thoughts welcomed. #Medieval #PlaceNames #Histodon #EnvHist #HistGeog

Here's the situation in 1250. Getting interesting, isn't it! The northern and western bias gets stronger. Emerging are the #Rivers #Trent, #Yorkshire #Ouse and #Derwent. #Medieval #Histodon #EnvHist #HistGeog

And now for some #river #PlaceName time-sliced #maps. Here is the situation in 1350AD after the first attestation spike. #Medieval #Histodon #EnvHist #HistGeog

Been loving sharing early, unformed research live on #Mastodon today on #river #PlaceNames. I feel like a pizza chef working in an open kitchen. And I wanted to thank everyone who has engaged. Not only sharing great ideas, but delivering additions to the database too! You’ve added tasty toppings. I will continue to post things for you to mull over. #Rivers #Medieval #EarlyModern #EnvHist #HistGeog #Histodons

My 1st (unfiltered) pass in #mapping #English #PlaceNames taking the form ‘X-on/upon-river Y’ (e.g. Stratford-on-Avon). Data (158 names) incl. both surviving & ‘lost’ names, with dates of 1st reference ranging from 900-1983! The distribution is intriguing, espec. the absence of names in the S & E, as is the tendency for names to cluster. Only named rivers drawn. Now time to slice, dice, & play. Your thoughts welcomed. #Medieval #EarlyModern #Names #EnvHist #Histodon #HistGeog #Rivers #Maps
