Packet Switching Tooters!
One more poll. (Late, sorry.) Do you use jumbo frames on your home LAN?
Boost for increased throughput. And see the other two polls in this thread.
Ok... I've got my brain tickled... Now my newly installed #Arch does what #Ubuntu did - mostly run idle and sometimes run a game.
The benefit is, I can now also run a new version of #Hyprland. I must say after enough time one can get used to all sorts of polished turds...š
I have even found a suitable theme and moulded it a bit to my liking... :bulbasaurroll:
Time for today's edition of "what went wrong with the computers today"ā¦
When I sat down at my computer this morning, the Windows 11 upgrade I kicked off yesterday had indeed failed as I had suspected it was going to <https://federate.social/@jik/115069952179945603>, but not in the way I expected. My VM was on the boot screen with the spinning Windows booting animation, and on top of that was a pop-up: "Please insert external drive".

#GoodMorning! Iāve had a little sleep last night, because Iāve rolled a dice on changing #Zigbee network channel⦠They do warn you itās experimental feature.
Itās been previously running on channel 11, which is in fact a shitshow, as there are up to 100 2.4GHz networks around hereā¦š
Switched to 25.
FORTUNATELY, most of the devices did migrate, leaving me with only a few stubborn switches.
It seems to be working more reliably. Fingers crossed!šš
LOL⦠In my excitement, Iāve presented the graphs to my Wife and I was instantly bashed for the TV playing all nightā¦š #GoodMorning #Zigbee #HomeAssistant #HomeIT #SmartHome
#GoodMorning! The sun is rising in the world of small people, so let them have fun! Little Franek decided to spend his savings on a second hand Playmobil set yesterday and he loves it!š
Damn, we did not have toys like that when we were kidsā¦š„¹
We do have other toys, though. Yesterday Iāve installed a sketchy #Zigbee device to with power monitoring clamps, so I can look at more stats and graphsā¦š
The device is Zemismart SDM01 and works with #HomeAssistant with a ZHA quirkā¦š
Couldnāt let it go. #Noctua fans are in, #RaspberryPi and itās drives are already 20°C cooler. Also, decided to take the modem out of the black chassis and put it back in itās own case. It was to clunky to due to the cables. Looks as clean, thoughā¦š„° #WifeApprovalFactor #HomeIT #HomeLab #DadFromIT
This looks SO MUCH better⦠#WifeApprovalFactor bonus points have been gained!š Itās now 1 PDU instead of 3 power strips. Easier to manage, easier to clean, easier on the eyes⦠Yes, I like to look at the hardware insideā¦š
At some point I will have to add 2 more fans to that black chassis, as Raspberry Pi and a hard drive inside are idling at 60°C. Also, I think I will take the modem out of that chassis, but Iām not 100% sure yetā¦
Daaaamn⦠Iāve finally had time and was able to configure the part of *arr suite⦠#Prowlarr, #Sonarr, #Radarr, #Transmission and #Jellyseerr now work in conjunction, so you āorderā something in Jellyseer and it goes through other apps to Transmission for download, to be later imported into #Jellyfin library⦠š
Took me half a day to retrofit #Orange modem and #RaspberryPi with an external hard drive into a short depth 1U chassisā¦
Mostly, because itās for MiniITX boards and nothing fitsā¦š But letās be honest, I knew itās gonna be a āprojectāā¦
I need to find a way put 4 keystones in it. 2 ethernet in the front, 1 usb and 1 optic fiber in the back, so itās easy to move in and out⦠If I only had a 3D printerā¦š
I guess Orange wouldnāt be happy about that disassembled modemā¦š
#HomeLab update!
You can do so much unnecessary thinking with a broken ribā¦š¤¦š»āāļø
Iāve just pulled a trigger on short depth 1U server chassis, to put Raspberry Pi 5 and optic fiber modem in itā¦š It should remove the clutter in the cupboard and when I get that 1U 16 port switch, it will look much nicer together!š
My plan is to bodge a faceplate of a keystone patch panel to the front of the case instead of the plastic cover, so I can have some rj45 keystones in the frontā¦š
Continuing the injury/boredom induced #HomeNetwork maintenance⦠The #BrokenRibProjectā¦š¤£š¤£š¤£
Iāve ordered a set of 10 ethernet patch cords:
5x 0,25m - short ones for gateway - modem - switch - RPi all-in-one server connection
5x 1m - for the TV, Apple TV, Denon receiver, NanoKVM, RetroPi
I hate I have various types of cables. Itās finally going to be unified with all flat white patch cords.š
I need to replace a #network cable running from the gateway to a switch. Itās going through 2 walls and 3 rooms and itās going to be a piece of shit work, moving heavy furniture and removing and regluing the baseboardsā¦
Itās been constantly downgrading auto-negotiated connection to 100Mbpsā¦
Had to open the box, push the cable in with a finger and itās now holding to 1 Gbpsā¦š Wondering for how long, thoughā¦š š
A few months worth of update of our #SmartHome status. A lot of new #Zigbee things, smart washing machine, rogue LG TV...
https://samulczyk.pl/2025/02/smart-home-and-home-lab-february-2025-update/
#GoodMorning! Ive been on a mission this morning to pick up and install a new CPU cooler. My choice is #Thermalright #PeerlessAssassin and I already see it was a good choice. Iām down from 54°C in idle and 94°C under load to respectively 42°C and whopping 72°Cā¦šš Thatās over 20°C less than 120mm AIO.
For around ā¬40? Thatās a jokeā¦š
Itās a big one though. Almost makes that 7900XT look smallā¦š
#GoodMorning! My Wife has plans, so I'm turning into stay at home dad for a moment. No cycling today. My brain is going to get bored, so I'm gonna plan some more unnecessary purchases...š
This is my overly complicated apartment #network! It doesn't have to be that overbuilt, but it is. And I'm planning more...
This still needs one more switch (like 16 ports, PoE) and maybe one more AP so I can look at nice graphs, logs and stats...š
After 20 days of waiting, the replacement #UniFi switch has arrived. It was previously named Icarus I, after a failed fictional mission to the Sun. It's only suitable to name it after another failed space mission, but this time we are going to honor the Challenger!š It worked right of the bat, so I'm happy!
I don't know if it was some kind of interference between #ZHA and #Ikea #Tradfri, but I started observing Ikea gateway dropping devices.
I've ditched the Swedish thing altogether and re-paired everything to my own #HomeAssistant instance.
Now... LED kitchen drivers were easy. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to do a bunch of old Tradfri outlets, but #Rodret remotes were a nightmare and it took me hours to pair them...
